Deep beneath the earth's surface, humanity exists without any knowledge that an above even exists. Not by choice — they just don't know anything else exists. Simon is a kid who digs tunnels for a living, quiet and unsure of himself, paired with Kamina, his self-appointed big brother figure who's convinced the surface is real and worth fighting for. One day Simon unearths a tiny mecha shaped like a face, and shortly after, the ceiling caves in because a giant robot crashes through it. That's basically the first episode, and the show only escalates from there. Gurren Lagann is a 27-episode TV series from Gainax that starts as a scrappy underdog mecha story and steadily expands its scope in ways that feel genuinely earned. The animation leans into exaggeration on purpose — fights are fluid, dramatic, and absurd in the best sense. The mecha designs keep evolving through combination and transformation mechanics that stay creative throughout. And the soundtrack by Taku Iwasaki carries this energy that sits somewhere between hype and emotional weight without tipping into one or the other. The real draw is how it handles its characters. Simon's arc from timid digger to something more is grounded even when the action around him gets cosmic. It's a coming-of-age story wearing a mecha suit. If you liked the raw energy and escalation of Kill la Kill, this is its spiritual predecessor. Fans of FLCL's chaotic heart or Code Geass's dramatic stakes will find a lot to connect with here too.
