Guimi Zhi Zhu: Wu Mian Ren

Synopsis
After dying and coming back, Klein Moretti decides the best way to lay low is to become a private detective named Sherlock Moriarty in a smog-choked Victorian-steampunk city. Great plan — except his very first cases drag him into a web of foreign spies, political conspiracies, and forces that could shatter his sanity. This ONA adapts one of the most beloved web novels in the Chinese fantasy space, and the setup alone is ridiculously layered. Klein's juggling a double life: by day he's a broke detective scraping together rent money, and behind the scenes he's masquerading as a mysterious deity called 'The Fool,' leading a secret society of powerful strangers who don't know his real identity. The magic system here is genuinely unique — you drink potions tied to specific archetypes and have to literally roleplay your assigned persona to advance safely, or you lose your mind to something out of Lovecraft's nightmares. The vibe is dense mystery wrapped in political thriller wrapped in cosmic horror, all set against grimy gaslit streets. If you liked the detective-meets-supernatural tension of Bungo Stray Dogs, the Victorian scheming of Moriarty the Patriot, or the layered timeline puzzles of Link Click, this hits a similar nerve but goes deeper into worldbuilding. Klein's bodyguard Sharron is a literal ghost, his ally Audrey is aristocracy hiding psychic powers, and every case peels back another layer of something ancient and deeply wrong. It's a slow burn that rewards patience.
