Synopsis
Once upon a time, a mermaid drunk on love made a forbidden wish and died for it. you'd think that's the end of her story. Classic Little Mermaid stuff, right? Except two hundred years later, she wakes up again, reincarnated in Lake Biwa, Japan, with no idea how the modern world works. That's where Sayonara Lara picks up. Lara is the mermaid in question, and her second chance at life lands her in Shiga Prefecture, where she ends up living with Mari, a local who takes on the thankless job of teaching an ex-mermaid how to be human. Think grocery stores, social cues, probably shoes. The setup is equal parts fish-out-of-water comedy and something genuinely tender, as Lara tries to figure out who she is when the thing that defined her, that doomed love, is centuries behind her. Kinema Citrus is handling production, with character designs from Shiori Tani (Revue Starlight), so expect visuals with real personality. The director, Takushi Koide, actually grew up near Lake Biwa, which gives the setting a grounded, lived-in quality you don't always get with fantasy anime. If you liked the oceanic warmth of Ponyo or the weird emotional magic of Lu Over the Wall, this feels like it's in that same lane: mythical creature learns to be a person, with all the quiet heartbreak that implies. Nagi no Asukara fans should also keep this on their radar. It's an original story, so nobody knows where it's headed, which honestly makes it more exciting.

Grace dying off-screen like that feels so anticlimactic. We barely got to know her and now she's supposedly gone forever. There was so much more the show could have done with her backstory instead of just flashbacks. That goodbye to Marie carried weight though

Rowan really lost the plot this episode. Telling Lara to stab the person she loves because her light got corrupted is insane. You can feel his bitterness toward humans poisoning everything. I used to think he was just protective but now he's just cruel
画面和音乐构图本身都很好，现代且简约的画面风格同时又带着旧时代的画风很有特点。故事前期的展开还不错，在得知舞台是在现代情况下激起了我的兴趣，直至前期的剧情发展，互动都很不错，但到后期故事进入到主线时整个剧情就开始很赶，到后面就不是很理解为什么身边的人都一直要拉拉寻找爱，然后开始重复着人类是丑陋的言语。 只知道最后我也不是很理解为什么拉拉要离开茉莉，到头来结果还是要重新开始寻找爱？

the knife monster thing reacting to Mari keeps getting pushed as proof and I want it to be true so bad. this show is either giving us the kiss or it's gonna hurt us and I can't tell which
that final shot of Lara in the princess form with the defiant line about living for love. 24 episodes of buildup and they land it on that. penultimate episodes usually coast but this one opened up everything about why the story keeps repeating
not gonna lie Grace's story played a little too close to Lara's for me. hitting the same beats twice made the first one feel less special. still liked the mirror stuff though
Grace kept her voice and still couldn't make the prince hear her. so the point was never the silence it was that they refuse to see them as people at all. that reframes the whole original story for me
Mari picking up the tiny grumpy fish Lara in that puddle got me more than it should have. after all that carnage the show gives you this one small gentle hand reaching down. brutal placement
my favorite beat was Rigmore saying she fell in love with Rowan and Grace hearing it as a betrayal. sisters sharing one dream until one of them grows past it. that quiet moment hurt more than the mob scene
the potion reverting the moment things get close is such a brutal detail. you go up there thinking you finally belong and your own body betrays you in front of the one person you wanted to be seen by
I couldn't stand Grace at first but after this episode I get it. The prince recoils the second he sees her real form and the mob shows up with torches. Grace killing him made more sense to me than Lara just taking it. Two hundred years of this story and the surface still treats them like monsters.
The mirror shattering while Mari is crying is going to live in my head for a while. That whole image of her watching Grace's life fall apart and not being able to stop it. Kinema Citrus cooked with that one.
so are we just not gonna talk about how Rowan is worse than Triton and it's not even close
Best episode this season idc what anyone else says. My teenage self would be screaming crying throwing up 100x more than I already am at this ep
