Future Police Urashiman
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Just your average guy living in 1983, Ryo gets flung forward in time to Neo Tokyo in the year 2050 during a freak accident — and to make things worse, he's lost most of his memories. With no way back and no real options, he ends up joining the Magna Police, a special unit that handles high-tech crime in this neon-drenched future city. His partners are the by-the-book Inspector Leon and the kindhearted Sister Sophia, and together they take on Necrime, a flashy criminal syndicate run by a guy named Ludovich who clearly enjoys being a villain. The whole hook is that Ryo's only real skill set is 20th-century street smarts, which clashes hilariously with the futuristic world around him. It's a genuine fish-out-of-water setup that the show commits to across all 50 episodes, mixing slapstick comedy with surprisingly fun action sequences. Tatsunoko Production gave this thing a gorgeous pop-art visual style with early cyberpunk vibes, and the synth-heavy soundtrack — especially the opening theme "Midnight Submarine" — is pure 80s gold. Mecha designs come from Kunio Okawara, which should tell you the hardware looks great. If you liked the buddy-cop energy of City Hunter, the retro-futuristic aesthetic of Space Adventure Cobra, or the comedic action of Dirty Pair, this is right in that wheelhouse. It's a 1983 TV series that deserves way more attention than it gets.
