Finally the first fight between Servants, official. We get to see snippets of how the Holy Grail War works. The fight started out a bit slow, but made up for it being tense at the end with great stakes. Love Iskandar's announcement at the end! Haha

One of the great classes in choreography is the battle between Saber and Lancer. Here, we witness the servant's immense power; it is a noble and wise phantom that will confront it. This animation is of the highest caliber. Saber's wound is a major issue.

This episode marks the start of the Grail War with the first showdown being Saber vs Lancer, for an anime released in 2011 the fights still holds up, it goes to show that studio Ufotable was ahead of its time in terms of action scenes

The fight choreography is so well done. You can tell they actually studied each character’s posture, stance, and weapon handling to keep it as historically accurate as possible. It makes every move feel more believable.

The background music goes hard during the fight, though I can see how some people might find it a bit too loud or overwhelming if they're just in this for the flashy action scenes. And the best part (putting on Lancer's POV) was the weapon and eventual identity reveal. Great build-up to that point!

Twisty plot is twisty. Since it’s a war, anything can happen and the unexpected sequence of events land really well. Framing of the shots make everything feel intense and immersive as it pulls you right into the characters' shoes.

EPISODE CONTEXT

Episodes 1-3 spent considerable time establishing the Masters, their motivations, and the rules of the Holy Grail War — episode 4 is where that foundation pays its first dividend as open combat begins. This battle sets the tone for how Fate/Zero handles its action: character-driven, strategically layered, and visually spectacular. The alliances, rivalries, and power dynamics introduced here ripple directly into the escalating conflicts that define the remainder of the first cour.
