READTHROUGH
Flat's Childhood Burden
His early life is revealed through disturbing flashbacks. A young Flat forces a smile in a mirror while an unseen woman's voice condemns him, wishing he had never existed. Later, a stern man chastises him for this "fake smile," teaching him a harsh lesson about authenticity. This upbringing suggests a deep-seated pressure to conform, to hide his true self.
The Cowboy Master
Transitioning abruptly to the present, Flat embraces a flamboyant cowboy persona, complete with sunglasses and hat. His cheerful demeanor contrasts sharply with his past, as he poses dramatically on a city street. Lord El-Melloi II's voice dryly notes his characteristic choices, hinting at Flat's unique, perhaps eccentric, nature. This playful display masks the deeper anxieties of his past.
Archer's Detachment
Ayaka expresses bewilderment at their surreal situation, questioning if they are truly being watched by a special unit. Archer, however, seems amused, even pleased, by the bizarre turn of events. He deflects Ayaka's observation of his enjoyment, suggesting a practiced emotional detachment. His calm exterior hides a deeper, unacknowledged satisfaction with the chaos.
Assassin's Calculation
Assassin and the old man with a long white beard engage in a brief, calculating exchange, deciding to withhold information about a "vampire in the hospital." Assassin insists on keeping a "trump card," a testament to his ingrained caution and strategic thinking. He muses on his pragmatic approach to life as he walks away, only to catch a glimpse of a mysterious hooded woman observing him.
Orlando's Test of Conviction
Orlando Reeves, surrounded by coffins, confronts a group of police officers, including Jester Karture, about their near-death experience with a monster. He challenges their idealistic motivations, questioning the practicality of fighting for "pretty words." Jester, despite his initial idealism, is visibly shaken by Orlando's cynical probing. The scene establishes Orlando's dark, manipulative nature as he tests their resolve.
The Philosophy of Fake Passion
Orlando reveals Jester's tragic backstory, then dismisses his idealism as "pretty words," claiming revenge is a more honest motivation. He then explains his own belief in "imitation," citing Lord El-Melloi II's rewritten Hamlet as his personal turning point. With glowing red eyes, he asserts that genuine passion can imbue even a fake with power, demonstrating this by magically enhancing Jester's gauntlet. This reveals Orlando's complex, almost theatrical, understanding of truth and illusion.
Flat's Unexpected Arrival
Back in Orlando's office, Vera reports urgent news while Flat, in his full cowboy attire, comically shouts about his innocence from the lobby. Orlando and Vera observe surveillance footage of Flat's "stealth infiltration," confirming his unusual methods. However, Orlando's sharp instincts are immediately piqued, as he pulls a dagger on Vera, demanding to know her true identity. This sets up a game of cat and mouse, revealing Orlando's constant vigilance.
Assassin's Empty Core
The hooded woman holds Assassin, challenging his lack of conviction. He reveals a devastating truth: he believes in nothing, not his employer, not magecraft, not even himself, a void born from a traumatic past of being experimented on and trained as a killer. The woman, with a surprising empathy, states he simply hasn't found something to believe in yet, leaving him with a cryptic hope for the "child" born to him. The old man's teasing about Francesca then provides a moment of unexpected blush from Assassin.
Flat's Masterful Deception
Vera, still under the dagger, defiantly questions Orlando's "power harassment." It is then that Flat strides in, cheerfully admitting his success and summoning two monstrous, tentacled familiars. He reveals he hacked the police system, and that 40% of the station's personnel are now "her" (the fake Vera). Orlando, though initially furious and disarmed, quickly shifts to impressed amusement, recognizing Flat's remarkable magecraft and cunning.
Tsubaki's Curse
Flat dramatically declares his purpose: to file a complaint. The scene then shifts to Flat's foster mother in the hospital, and the revelation that Kurooka Tsubaki, Flat's sister, is the source of a spiritual beast and a curse plaguing Snowfield. Orlando immediately grasps the gravity of the situation. Flat, in a shocking moment of pragmatism, suggests blowing up the hospital with large-scale magecraft, showcasing his unconventional problem-solving.
A Principled Stand
Orlando rejects the hospital destruction, stating his principle of not sacrificing a girl unless absolutely necessary. He vows to discard the "righteous" option if it means harming an innocent. Flat, relieved, reveals he was testing Orlando, affirming his chief's integrity. He then makes a cryptic call, revealing his connection to Lord El-Melloi II.
Operation Obliteration
Lord El-Melloi II briefly appears, confirming his analytical nature. Meanwhile, Assassin, with the old man and False Assassin, meticulously gathers intelligence on the factions. False Assassin dramatically reveals the "Obliteration Operation" targeting Tsubaki at the Central Hospital. The girl's tragic history as a test subject, imprisoned like a "caged bird," is revealed, and False Assassin claims this operation will liberate her, a statement Assassin views with grim skepticism.
Assassin's Internal Battle
The old man warns Assassin of widespread infiltrators, including within Clan Karture, making the mission dangerous. Assassin expresses concern for Tsubaki, struggling with Francesca's enigmatic advice to "do as he likes." In a stark, internal monologue, his reflection becomes a skeletal warning, threatening to consume him if his conviction falters. Assassin resolves to sacrifice everything for the United States, even his own people, showcasing a ruthless determination born from his past.
The Unlikely Alliance
Lord El-Melloi II analyzes the burgeoning alliance between the police and the Holy Church. Flat enthusiastically meets Hansa Cervantes, the Holy Grail War supervisor, charming him with questions about rocket punches and drills. Hansa, revealing his "inner child," playfully winks and boasts about his extending arm. Their instant rapport solidifies a powerful, if unconventional, alliance.
Full Steam Ahead
Vera confirms the operation is ready, its objective to secure Tsubaki and avoid civilian casualties. Orlando reflects on Flat's unique "disconnect with the world," which he finds both terrifying and a source of strength. Flat, looking at the city, reaffirms his resolve to save the girl because it's "what he's supposed to do." The episode culminates with Vera, Hansa, and the police force preparing for battle, as Hansa summons Berserker, a three-headed wolf, ready to unleash its power.
EPISODE REVIEWS

Great Alliances are formed!

It took a while but there's finally movement again with the police force. Been waiting for that Caster to have some kind of showcase and deliver with his promise to that one kid about a new arm. It was too short for my taste tho

In such little time, we get to see character development from Sigma, which in turn influences Assassin too. Would it be too much to ask to see them tag team soon???
