Fafner
Oshimeter
Synopsis
On the quiet island of Tatsumiyajima, Kazuki Makabe goes about his daily life where nothing ever happens — or at least, that's what the adults have carefully made every kid believe. Turns out Tatsumiyajima is humanity's last hidden stronghold against the Festum, alien entities that can assimilate anything they touch. When the island's cover is blown in the first episode, Kazuki and his classmates discover their school was literally built on top of a military installation, and they're the ones expected to pilot the Fafner mechs. Not because they're chosen ones. Because there's nobody else left. This 25-episode TV series from Xebec has a reputation for being a slow burn that rewards patience. The early episodes spend time establishing the community and relationships on the island before systematically dismantling all of it. The cost of piloting a Fafner isn't just physical danger — it erodes who you are, and the show doesn't flinch from showing that. If you liked Neon Genesis Evangelion's psychological weight on child pilots or RahXephon's mysterious alien threat wrapped in personal drama, Fafner lives in that same emotional neighborhood. It also shares DNA with Gundam SEED's wartime camaraderie, but trades political intrigue for something more intimate and claustrophobic. Angela's soundtrack carries a lot of the heavy lifting emotionally, and the mecha designs have a distinct organic quality that sets them apart. Fair warning though — this one doesn't pull punches with its cast. Get attached at your own risk.
