It was so weird to see Goku crying over a needle when he just finished fighting a planetary threat and it makes him feel way more human than usual

krillin_ki_59
I really felt for those orphans because they think Krillin is a space pirate and they just lost everything to this Frieza guy who sounds like a total nightmare

mikau_281
Gohan and Krillin had to dodge a whole meteor shower just to prove they were the good guys and Bulma really carries this team with her flying skills

I actually didn't mind this being filler because hearing about Frieza for the first time through those kids made the threat feel so much more real. It's one thing to hear Vegeta talk about him, but seeing orphans whose lives were ruined by his soldiers is another level of dark. Plus Bulma absolutely crushed it behind the wheel during that meteor swarm

I think the fake Namek twist was a bit annoying, but the way Krillin handled the kids made me respect him a lot more in this episode

Vegeta landing on that planet and meeting Cui is a cool side plot and it shows how much tension there is in Frieza's army right now

Bulma getting mad at the kids for capturing them is classic her and the way Krillin tries to play peacemaker while they are all stuck in those traps was pretty funny
catarina_claes_164's avatar
catarina_claes_164
This whole orphan plot feels like such a distraction and these random characters who are definitely never going to show up in the story ever again are just slowing down the trip to Namek

Vegeta just casually flying around and looking for his next fight is the best part of these episodes and he really does not care about anything but getting stronger than Goku
mogma's avatar

I found the mirror ship stuff a bit tedious and I mostly just wanted to see more of what Vegeta was up to on his way to find the dragon balls
mamoru_chiba's avatar
mamoru_chiba
The terror those kids feel toward Frieza before we even meet the guy really sells how scary he is and it makes the stakes feel much bigger for when the gang finally lands on Namek

It was a bit of a weird detour, but the part where they had to dodge the asteroids while the kids were freaking out was actually kind of tense
captain_keeta_278's avatar
captain_keeta_278
Those orphans really went through it because of Cui and the Frieza Force so seeing them all paranoid and hiding on that invisible ship makes a lot of sense for their characters

Goku being a literal god and crying over a tiny hospital needle is my favorite thing ever and I could not stop laughing at him acting like a total baby while Chi-Chi just watched him scream
blue's avatar

The mirror ship stuff felt kind of slow and everyone just wants them to get to Namek already but those kids thinking Gohan was one of Frieza's men was a pretty dark touch
crystal_320's avatar

Goku screaming in the hospital was the perfect break from all the heavy stuff with the space kids and it makes him feel so much more human
gyomei_goliath's avatar
gyomei_goliath
It is wild how this filler stuff actually makes Frieza feel like a massive threat before the main cast even meets him and seeing those orphans and how terrified they are of powerful warriors really paints a dark picture of the galaxy and it is a nice change of pace from just fighting, and honestly the meteor scene with Bulma flying was impressive

Zeshin and Bun were being such jerks but you can not even be mad at them after hearing how their parents died and their world was destroyed
hatifnatik's avatar
hatifnatik
Krillin asking about the tails made my brain itch because it reminds you that the Saiyans were basically just hired muscle for this Frieza guy
isekaibro's avatar

The way the kids were so terrified of anything strong because of what Frieza did really put into perspective how much of a monster he actually is

EPISODE CONTEXT

Sitting between the departure for Planet Namek and the crew's actual arrival, this filler episode is part of an extended stretch of space-travel detours that pad the journey. 'Friends or Foes?' preceded it with similar encounter-of-the-week energy, and the episodes ahead continue building toward the long-awaited Namek landfall and the Frieza saga's explosive escalation.
