I really dug that weird fish guy turning the whole ring into a giant bubble of water because it felt like old school Dragon Ball goofy stuff

The animation looked super janky in those close ups and it really sucked the energy out of the tournament bracket

it is honestly kind of funny seeing goku lose his mind over a fish man in a swimming pool after everything he went through with cell and the tournament filler can be a bit hit or miss with the animation quality during the pikkon fight and olibu being so huge but the solar flare strategy made the victory feel earned despite the weird setting

arqua had goku looking like he never learned how to swim and the way goku had to rely on his old techniques instead of just power felt refreshing for a change

The comedy was a bit much at times during the tournament, but Arqua turning the ring into a lake was a creative way to mess with a saiyan who usually flies

That fight against Arqua was hilarious because of how much Goku was struggling in the pond, and seeing the solar flare come back to win the match was a really nice touch

i found it pretty weird seeing goku get pushed around by a giant fish in a pond but the solar flare setup at the end was a cool way to win

some of the drawings in this episode looked so rough especially when pikkon was fighting and it really hurt the quality of the action even if the water fight was funny

that solar flare move was actually a smart play to get goku out of the water and it felt like a nice throwback to how he used to fight in the original series

i think arqua might be one of the funniest filler villains because goku was genuinely struggling to breathe while that weirdo swam circles around him in a giant floating ball of water

the animation for the pikkon and olibu fight felt really rushed compared to the gag stuff with the water guy and it made the whole tournament feel a bit inconsistent

goku looked so goofy trying to fight that fish man underwater while everyone watched from the sidelines and i actually liked seeing him have to use his brain with that solar flare finish

Having Goku act like he was in trouble against a frog looking guy after he just fought Cell feels like a major step back for his character

The way the tournament is being handled feels like a fun side story, although Aqua being a threat to Goku is a little hard to believe after the Cell Games

Watching Goku fight underwater was funny because he was flailing around like he forgot how to fly and Aqua actually had a solid plan with that arena change but the ending where Goku just blows the water out of the ring to win was classic and now we finally get to see Pikkon step up

I was surprised that Aqua actually stood a chance for a minute there because his ability to control the arena really threw Goku for a loop

Goku blowing the water out of the ring was a clever bit of improvising and it showed why he is a top tier fighter

This whole Otherworld Tournament is just a big break from the serious stuff and the water fight with Aqua really leans into that sillier side of things

Pikkon is definitely the one to watch and seeing him observe the match makes the wait for his fight with Goku even more intense

Seeing Goku struggle to breathe in the water was a bit confusing, but I guess it makes sense that even a Super Saiyan needs oxygen sometimes

EPISODE CONTEXT

Episode 197 falls squarely in the interstitial filler block between the Cell Games arc and the seven-year time skip leading into the Buu Saga. The major battles are over, Gohan has had his defining moment, and the series is in a holding pattern before reintroducing the cast as older versions of themselves. Skipping this episode entirely will have zero impact on your understanding of upcoming canon events.
