The logic of a tournament where you can't actually die because everyone is already dead makes the stakes feel a bit low compared to Cell

Episode Context

Landing at episode 196 of 291, this falls in the stretch between the Cell Saga's conclusion and the buildup toward the Buu Saga, a window Dragon Ball Z fills with filler content during peacetime on Earth. The preceding episodes deal with the aftermath of Cell's defeat, and this tournament-focused detour is part of that cooldown period before the series ramps back up with the World Martial Arts Tournament and Buu's eventual emergence. Skipping this episode has zero impact on following the main storyline.
