Synopsis
Hina Tsurugi and her family have just moved to a quaint seaside town. Hoping to savor the sight of the peaceful ocean, Hina stumbles upon a girl named Yuuki Kuroiwa—an upperclassman at her new school—who invites Hina to join her in fishing. Hina reels in an octopus, which falls onto her; being afraid of bugs and big creatures, she panics and begs Yuuki to remove it from her. Yuuki sees this as an opportunity to force Hina to join the school's Breakwater Club—a club where members gather, catch, and eat various types of marine life as their main activity. Although her attempts to refuse to join fail, Hina slowly begins to discover the hidden joy in fishing. Her view on the sport changes, now looking forward to all the delightful experiences she can take part in alongside her fellow club members.

Seeing Hina take on the advice of the professionals and alter it to her own needs shows how much she has grown in regards to her fishing skills, and how much she is willing to learn, despite the circumstances that had led her to join the club in the first place.
Seeing how the group values Hina becoming assertive in her independence in fishing, meaning that they give her space to learn and make mistakes, is heartwarming. It’ll do her well in her confidence in the hobby, which is important as a character.
Learning about the different kinds of fishing techniques, even while fishing for the usual fish, adds some excitement.
Focusing on the reality of the safety issues that the Breakwater Club could face is important, as well as Makoto trying to face her fear.
Despite being an anime that has little plot beyond educating about fishing, they at least keep it interesting by fishing for different kinds and in different locations.
Seeing how much Makoto prepared for Hina and Natsumi’s safety regarding light rock fishing was heartwarming. It’s important how the episode promotes safety while fishing and being around the ocean.
Seeing how Hina has to adjust how she does things in the club for things that make her uncomfortable shows a relatable reaction to things that people may not have grown up doing.
Seeing Hina grow to confront and even enjoy things that cause her discomfort is great to see. It’s easy to tell that the Breakwater Club and its members are helping her grow by facing her into situations that she wouldn’t have chosen herself, a vital lesson for teenagers.
Everyone loves a good shopping trip episode. And the plot stays connected to the theme of fishing and educating the audience on the proper gear needed for the hobby.
The audience learns a lot about different Japanese fish through the show through Hina’s curiosity. Each episode is used to learn about the fishing technique for different fish, so the plot may seem slow, but still very educational.
Seeing Hina having to find ways to fit in and enjoy her new school and town as a teenager is relatable. You can tell that having a friend like Natsumi and the Breakwater Club does help the transition by forcing her out of her comfort zone.
A good, wholesome introduction to the story and characters. Having a novice for a main character allows the audience to learn about fishing along with her.
