Chainsaw Man Episode 9: From Kyoto

Amidst the lingering chaos, Akane Sawatari calmly enters, summoning the Snake Devil to effortlessly devour the Ghost Devil. This swift, cold move extinguishes Aki's last flicker of hope. Akane and Katana Man then speak of their mission: to secure the Chainsaw Man's heart. Their casual mention of Makima being 'taken care of' reveals a chillingly well-orchestrated conspiracy.

Just as Akane orders retreat, a mechanical revving emanates from the debris. Denji's blood-soaked body twitches, chainsaw blades slowly emerging. He transforms into Chainsaw Man, driven by a primal rage, ready to tear into those who harmed his friends. Katana Man readies his own blades, recognizing the feral threat. Aki watches with a fragile hope.

The battle between Chainsaw Man and Katana Man rages across the rooftops, a dizzying display of brute force against refined technique. Akane coordinates an ambush, bringing in armed thugs. Katana Man mocks Denji's lack of training before delivering a devastating, precise attack. Despite Denji's desperate struggle, the combined forces overwhelm him, leaving him bisected and unconscious.

A somber montage reveals the horrific scale of the attacks: dead devil hunters litter the streets, Hirokazu Arai among them. Then, in a bullet-riddled train car, Makima slowly sits up, soaked in blood but unharmed. Her would-be assassins are paralyzed, witnessing the impossible. She stands, a terrifying enigma.

In Kyoto, Michiko Tendo and Yuutaro Kurose are left stunned by Makima's bloodied but composed appearance. She dismisses her survival with a cryptic explanation: she was shot, but 'not hit.' Unmoved by the massacre in Tokyo, she cancels their dinner plans. Instead, she demands two very specific items for an immediate operation: thirty life-sentenced inmates and a high-altitude shrine.

A bus full of blindfolded inmates journeys through the mountains, their whispers filled with dread. They are brought to a secluded shrine, where Makima, now in clean clothes, awaits. The men are forced to kneel in rows, shivering with fear. Makima stands before them, perfectly composed, preparing her hands for a dark ritual.

Makima instructs Tendo and Kurose to don blindfolds, classifying her technique. She then begins her ritual, asking each inmate for a Tokyo attacker's name. With a deliberate, crushing motion of her hands, she squashes an invisible object. The inmate collapses, drained of life, his sacrifice a conduit for long-distance death. She moves to the next, her focus clinical.

Back in Tokyo, Akane Sawatari and Katana Man celebrate their 'victory' as thugs load Denji's body. Suddenly, a thug is crushed into pulp by an invisible force. Panic erupts as more fall, folded like paper. Akane screams for escape, Katana Man lashes out at empty air, their confidence replaced by primal terror. The van speeds away, but the invisible attacks continue, until the driver is also crushed.

A small figure appears in the street, blocking the van's path. It is Kobeni Higashiyama, clutching a kitchen knife, her usual terror replaced by an unnerving intensity. She spots the lifeless body of her partner, Hirokazu Arai, nearby. Grief washes over her, then gives way to a blank, lethal focus. Her posture shifts, battle-ready.

Kobeni moves with shocking speed, a blur of motion. She dodges bullets with acrobatic grace, incapacitating gunmen with surgical precision. When Akane summons the Snake Devil, Kobeni leaps onto its tail, running up its back to slash the van's tires. Her combat prowess is a revelation, shocking both her enemies and the audience.

Kobeni uses Denji's upper body as a shield, firing a stolen pistol to drive Akane and Katana Man back into their van. Realizing their mission is a complete failure, they retreat, speeding away with damaged tires. Kobeni watches them go, then her combat focus shatters. She collapses, sobbing uncontrollably, apologizing to Denji for her past attempts on his life. She pulls his bisected body closer, lamenting her lot, but she does not leave him, remaining with him until the new day.

Hours later, Makima meets Madoka in Tokyo Station. He resigns, unable to serve an organization that disregards its members' lives. Madoka reveals the consolidation of Divisions 1, 2, and 3 into the new Division 4, now under Makima's direct command. He regards her with suspicion, sensing this outcome was perhaps her true aim all along.

Tendo and Kurose prepare to return to Kyoto, politely declining to join Makima's new division. Makima thanks them with a subtle smile. She is left alone on the bustling platform, her gaze fixed on something unseen. The camera lingers, emphasizing her mysterious, untouchable nature, a figure who has not only survived a catastrophic threat but emerged with even greater control.
