It’s not easy to connect with Denji in this episode, as his motivation revolves more around teenage impulses than solid development. The animation is decent, but Aki is the one who truly holds the interest and is easier to connect with.

Denji showing up to Public Safety HQ like a lost puppy but make it unhinged Aki immediately hates him and Makima is already doing THAT smile. The power imbalance is immaculate. Also the Fox Devil cameo? Iconic. 🐕

Makima is a total tease, establishing a dangerous Aura from the jump. Denji being a "man of culture" makes his motivations hilariously grounded amidst the gore. Power absolutely fits her name, her chaotic energy is a total W. MAPPA's cityscapes look Peak.

Denji’s relatable mindset takes center stage after he meets Makima and she offers him a job. The dialogue between Denji and the no-nonsense devil hunter Aki Hayakawa establishes both of their characters in a way that balances seriousness and comedy. Excellent animation as well.

i am actually terrified of makima after she told denji he is her dog because those eyes are so creepy and she is totally playing him

denji just spamming kicks to akis crotch is the funniest way to start a partnership and he really did not care about the rules at all

Makima calling Denji "her dog" genuinely made my skin crawl; her eyes were totally devoid of emotion, making me wonder just how much control she plans to exert over him. Part of me thinks Denji's just too naive to grasp how deeply messed up that entire interaction was, but it definitely felt like a dark promise for his future.

Aki tried to act all cool and tough, but then he got wrecked by a few kicks to the nuts

I can't believe how much I like Power already, because her energy is just on another level compared to everyone else, and watching her walk in demanding everyone kneel before her was so funny and then she just goes and crushes a devil with a giant blood hammer and Denji and Aki are going to have a nightmare living with her

Denji going absolutely wild with all those toast toppings was actually pretty surprising, even for him. I mean, my dude was clearly making up for lost time, and it just made me realize how desperate he is for even the simplest joys after everything he's been through.

Denji kicking Aki in the balls repeatedly was so funny and you can tell those two are going to have the worst roommate dynamic ever

Power finally arrived and she is absolutely unhinged and that blood hammer she used to crush the sea cucumber devil was huge and she just looks like she is going to be total trouble for everyone

Makima making him say woof was actually kind of terrifying and I do not trust her at all especially with the way she was feeding him those noodles like he was a real pet

Makima telling Denji he can only say yes or woof really caught me off guard because she looks so kind but her eyes are just so creepy and intense

Watching Aki get so stressed out about Denji making a mess of the apartment and putting way too much jam on his toast was such a funny contrast to the devil hunting

How Denji just gazed at those condiments like they were pure gold really hammered home for me how deprived he's been, making his simple boob-touching dream feel surprisingly earned after all his suffering. Makima feeding him those noodles was a moment that simultaneously melted my heart and sent a shiver down my spine, because it felt like she was both caring for him and subtly training him like a pet.

EPISODE CONTEXT

Coming off the high-stakes origin story of episode 1, this second installment serves as essential setup, transitioning Denji from survival mode into the structured world that will define the rest of the season. Key relationships with Makima, Aki, and Power are established here, forming the core cast dynamics that fuel every major arc ahead. It's the foundation episode — what happens here pays off across the remaining ten installments.
