The episode opens on a tranquil, traditional Japanese home, lights glowing warmly in the night. The narrator's voice, calm and measured, sets a familiar scene: "A long, long time ago. At the old man and woman's house..." It is a tableau of peaceful domesticity, promising a simple, heartfelt tale.

Inside, an Old man and Old woman share a quiet meal over their sunken hearth, their faces content in the warmth. Suddenly, a Tabby cat peeks from behind the shoji screen, its eyes wide with curiosity, then boldly enters the room. The couple looks up, startled, their peaceful evening interrupted by this most uninvited of guests.

The Tabby cat stands upright, paws on its hips, and declares with stern authority, "I came in on my own." With a decisive paw, it slides the shoji door shut, sealing itself into the room. Its face then reappears in a crack, issuing a clear warning, "Next time, please absolutely do not peek, okay?" It is a charmingly imperious creature.

Left bewildered by the cat's ultimatum, the Old man and Old woman sigh in confusion, but the closed door only fuels their curiosity. The Old man finds the silence "Too quiet" and admits, "When I'm told not to, it makes me want to open it even more." He cannot resist a peek, and their wide-eyed gasps confirm they have seen something truly surprising.

What the Old man and Old woman discover behind the door is not a weaver, but the Tabby cat fast asleep under their kotatsu, purring contentedly. Their initial disbelief gives way to amused sighs. The cat's little pink tongue peeks out, a picture of absolute feline bliss, surrounded by faint cat silhouettes.

The Tabby cat emerges again, confidently announcing, "I am the cat you saved," and with a grand gesture, adds, "This is a thank you." Then, from behind the door, a procession of other felines appears: a Calico cat, a Ginger cat, and a Dark grey cat, all looking happy. The single saved cat has brought a full feline entourage.

Soon, the Old man and Old woman are nestled at their kotatsu, utterly enveloped by cats. The Tabby cat and its new companions, including Calico cats and Ginger cats, have made themselves completely at home. The Old man muses, "I don't remember saving this many," but his final, happy sigh confirms the joyful, if overwhelming, acceptance of their new family.

A brief interlude follows, where the familiar tale of "The Crane's Repayment" is retold, but with subtle feline imagery. The narrator recounts the crane's rescue, its transformation into a girl, and her forbidden weaving, which the Old man and Old woman eventually peek at, driving the crane away. This serves as a direct comparison to the cat's version.

The credits roll, a delightful parade of felt cat dolls reimagining classic fairy tales. A hero Cat doll flies past paper-cutout dragons and rests on turtles. Other Felt cat dolls dance playfully, while familiar scenes like Snow White, Momotaro, and even Peter Pan are re-envisioned with feline characters. The episode ends with cat-eared peaches, bamboo, and glass slippers, culminating in the original Tabby cat doll lying contentedly on its back, a final happy meow.
