The narrator sets a traditional scene, with an old couple, Ojiisan and Obaasan, in their rustic home. Suddenly, a tabby cat, with quite remarkable eyebrows, slides open a door. It announces itself as the cat they previously helped, speaking with human articulation, demanding attention and gratitude.

The cat turns its back, sliding the door shut behind it, cloistering itself away from the couple's view. But not before delivering a stern, almost theatrical warning: "Never peek." The closing door and the grid lines on screen serve to amplify this sense of mystery.

The old couple exchange bewildered glances, hearing the rhythmic sounds of work from behind the closed door. Ojiisan wonders aloud what the cat is doing, a universal human failing, he admits. The forbidden door only makes them more desperate to know what lies behind it.

Despite the warning, Ojiisan cannot resist. His hand trembles, then slowly, he slides the door open. The cat, caught in the act of its secret labor, freezes, its eyes wide with shock. The couple gasp at the sight, the boundary irrevocably crossed.

From a high angle, the true nature of the cat's work is revealed: a large, fluffy white hairball. The cat lets out a mournful cry, its expression shifting to deep sadness and resignation. "You peeked," it declares, "I must leave." It presents the hairball to Obaasan as a final, bittersweet gift.

With a graceful leap, the cat exits, disappearing through the sliding door and out of their lives. Obaasan holds the hairball, her face clouded with confusion. Ojiisan peers over her shoulder, the realization dawning on him that their precious gift is merely a cat's regurgitated fur.

The screen changes to text, introducing "The Original Story," explicitly named as "The Crane's Return of a Favor." A male narrator reads the traditional tale, but his delivery becomes increasingly confused. He questions why it is about a crane, not a cat, demonstrating a delightful meta-awareness.

The credits begin with a charming stop-motion sequence featuring felt cats in various fantastical and historical settings, from a floating samurai cat to a yoga-practicing feline. The animation is a delightful, imaginative romp through cat-themed folklore and fairy tales, culminating in subtle references to "Momotaro," "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," and "Cinderella." Finally, the original tabby cat from the main story returns, holding its hairball, looking directly at the viewer with a thoughtful, knowing gaze, a gentle meow closing the episode.
