Synopsis
So famous he can barely breathe without cameras in his face, Kouji Nanjou has everything the public can see — but the one thing the media can't crack is the real story behind his music — his dark, all-consuming obsession with a young man named Takuto Izumi. This 1994 OVA from Madhouse isn't structured like a normal anime. It's basically an animated music video collection, five tracks performed by the legendary Show Hayami, each one peeling back another layer of Kouji's psyche. Think less plot, more mood. The whole thing plays like a fever dream set to rock music, drenched in that unmistakable 90s BL aesthetic — sharp jawlines, impossibly long limbs, moody gothic imagery straight from Minami Ozaki's manga pages. The word 'cathexis' in the title is a psychology term for investing intense emotional energy into something, and that's exactly what this portrays. Love here isn't sweet or comforting. It's obsessive, self-destructive, and borderline suffocating, which makes it way more interesting than your standard romance setup. If you've seen Zetsuai 1989, this is its companion piece and basically required viewing. If you liked the raw emotional intensity of Given or the music-industry drama in Gravitation but wished they went darker and more experimental, this scratches that itch. It's only one episode, so the time commitment is nothing. Just let the atmosphere wash over you.
