Synopsis
On the surface, Keita Aono seems like every bit the regular high school kid, his biggest concerns are military trivia and the girls in his class, until his childhood friend Hinoki suddenly transfers back into his life. When he follows her after school, he stumbles into Bottom World, an underground amusement park that was shut down after something horrible happened there. What he finds waiting in the dark is not what either of them expected. That's where things get weird, fast. Betterman is a 1999 TV series from Sunrise that quietly blends mecha with genuine horror, not the jump-scare kind, but the creeping, biological dread kind. There's a mystery at the center of it called Algernon, a phenomenon that makes people turn violent in disturbing ways, and unraveling it becomes the whole point. The show takes its time and rewards patience, building atmosphere the way Ergo Proxy does, slow, strange, and unsettling in ways that stick with you. If you liked the psychological weight of Neon Genesis Evangelion but wanted more horror and less teen angst, this scratches a similar itch. Fans of When They Cry's village-level paranoia will also feel at home with how Betterman handles its sense of dread. It's not a flashy show, and it's not trying to be. It's dark, genuinely strange, and one of the more overlooked entries from a golden era of experimental mecha anime.

takab★★★★☆EP 19The episode turns the school festival into a psychological clusterfuck, trapping Keita and Hinoki inside a mirror house while Kaede gets targeted by the Superhuman Federation. The mirror doubles get properly nasty, but Shou finally confronts his own baggage. Weirdly introspective, surprisingly funny, and damn effective.
deadend★★★★☆VerifiedEP 26I feel like it was rushed, dumping all the mystery information at once and making it hard to process. The Sakura reveal surprised me most. Miyako’s “I knew it” was annoying, while Kaede and Shou’s ending really hit me emotionally.
deadend★★★★☆EP 25What?! That was a shocking choice of words at the end. I was really waiting for Hinoki’s lore, but I guess she’s just normal. One episode left—I wonder how they’ll explain all these mysteries!
deadend★★★★☆EP 24The tense action is back! Tyran is really strong, and the episode was very emotional, especially the ending. How are they going to make it out of this one?
deadend★★★★☆EP 23The first half was light-hearted, with characters deepening their bonds, like the calm before the storm. Then the tension rises, pulling us back into the action and mysteries.
deadend★★★★☆VerifiedEP 22It’s crazy how much more lore and development the side characters get than the main duo. The contrast was very evident—one is still developing while the other feels complete. We finally see the Neuronoid in action again!
deadend★★★☆☆VerifiedEP 21The Yanagi and Kaede moments were nice. They’re cute and seem to understand each other better than the main pair. After that ending, I’m really wondering what actually happened. Did he succeed?
takab★★★★☆EP 18The episode goes full cannibal-horror, trapping Keita and Hinoki in a facility where everyone suddenly wants to eat everyone. The culprit turns out to be a transplant chemical with a nasty side effect, while the real mastermind finally steps into the light. Disturbing as hell, and a damn good reveal.
takab★★★★☆EP 17Betterman turns a Tyran meeting into a goddamn shared nightmare, complete with dead relatives, Bottom World and Keita dreaming about kissing Hinoki. The episode digs into Shou’s trauma while finally explaining the Tyrans’ creepy organic brains. Weird, funny, and surprisingly effective as psychological horror.
takab★★★★☆EP 16The three prototype Tyrans finally arrive, except nobody’s actually piloting them. Kaede gets pulled into their bizarre little collective while Shou confronts a horrifying connection to his past. The episode gets surprisingly emotional amid all the psychic bullshit, making this a strong turning point.
takab★★★★☆EP 15Betterman takes a suspiciously normal date with Keita and Hinoki to Enoshima, while Mode Warp finally lays out the ugly history behind Algernon and B.P.L. Then three Bettermen show up and immediately start throwing hands. Heavy on exposition.
takab★★★★☆EP 14Betterman finally cashes in on all that Algernon buildup, as the team learns why B.P.L. has been growing flowers on people. Then King Behemoth shows up, because apparently this biotech nightmare needed a boss fight. The lore gets heavy-handed, but the action and Forte reveal make the escalation somewhat hit.
takab★★★★☆EP 13Betterman gets weird, as the team discovers an Animus garden growing from human bodies. Then everyone gets high on flower pheromones because apparently that’s a perfectly reasonable workplace hazard. The plot thickens nicely, though the episode saves its biggest WTF for the ending.
takab★★★★☆EP 12Whew. Betterman kicks things off with an aircraft getting absolutely shredded by flying insects, then dumps everyone into B.P.L.’s monster factory. The episode finally puts its bizarre pieces together, while Keita and Hinoki face a swarm that refuses to die. Messy, hectic, and a damn good escalation.
deadend★★★★☆VerifiedEP 20Wow, I wasn’t expecting that from Kaede! That ending was quite shocking. We also learn more about Yanagi’s power, making the mystery even more intriguing.
deadend★★★★☆VerifiedEP 19Damn, the illusions never end! I liked the soundtrack in this episode. But honestly, it feels like things are dragging—we reach somewhere, only to switch to somebody else.
deadend★★★★☆VerifiedEP 18I keep getting more curious about Yanagi. There’s no way that’s just precognition. There are so many mysteries, but that’s what makes this anime so engaging. The story keeps pulling me in!
deadend★★★★☆VerifiedEP 17Interesting episode with weird, eerie vibes. We got to see some characters’ intentions and feelings, while others found a new resolve. I’m very curious about the Yakusugi man.
deadend★★★★☆VerifiedEP 16A more serious episode, filled with emotion and psychological depth. The contrast between the scenes, the clash of beliefs, their struggles with the past, and the deepening relationships made it really impactful.
