READTHROUGH
Shadows of Regret
The episode begins with a series of stark, silhouetted images. Akihisa and Shouko, framed against warm, fading light, speak of past mistakes and unresolved feelings. Their words, delivered as internal monologues, hint at a deep personal history, a burden each carries. This visual technique creates an immediate sense of introspection, drawing the viewer into a memory, a lament for choices made or not made. It is a promise of emotional depth before any action truly begins.
The Prodigy and the Persistent Girl
We are abruptly transported to Minazuki Elementary, where young Yuuji Sakamoto is introduced as a prodigious student, highly praised by adults but already displaying a dismissive arrogance. His classmate, young Shouko Kirishima, watches him with quiet admiration, a nascent devotion evident even then. Despite his dismissiveness, Shouko's unwavering attention hints at a bond forming, one that will challenge Yuuji's self-contained world. The contrast between his intellectual pride and her simple presence is striking.
An Unconventional Connection
Shouko's attempts to engage Yuuji are refreshingly direct, though perhaps misguided for a young girl. She asks about her growing breasts, a question that sends Yuuji into flustered embarrassment. This innocent boldness, coupled with Yuuji's discomfort, is both comedic and revealing. He views her as persistent, annoying even, yet his reactions betray a deeper awareness of her, a crack in his carefully constructed indifference. His narration reveals that Shouko's privileged background ironically led to her social isolation, making her cling to him.
The Lonely Girl's Resolve
Shouko reveals her family's talk of transferring her to Saint Leo Girls' Academy, a move she desperately wants to resist. She has finally made friends, she explains, and finds school 'fun' in a way her large, lonely home is not. Yuuji, with characteristic bluntness, suggests she bring her new friends to her house, but Shouko admits they aren't close enough yet. Her determination to prevent the transfer, spurred by a newfound sense of belonging, is palpable. This stakes her vulnerability clearly, making her persistence all the more poignant.
Yuuji's Calculated Confidence
Later, Yuuji is confronted by older boys, frustrated by his arrogance after he bested them in a mock exam. He meets their threats with defiant confidence, even mockery, dismissing them as 'fools.' His cunning extends to anticipating their revenge; he hides his personal belongings, planning to expose their actions to the teacher. This reveals a manipulative, detached intellect, one that calculates outcomes and distances itself from emotional engagement. He believes himself untouchable, above the petty squabbles of others.
A Mother's Knowing Heart
Yuuji's return home provides a brief, lighter interlude. His mother teases him about Shouko, clearly aware of her son's complicated feelings, even if Yuuji denies them. Her playful remarks, like her bizarre culinary experiments with nikujaga, highlight a warm, if eccentric, family dynamic. Yuuji then retreats to the library, pleased with his cleverness, convinced his plan to expose the bullies is flawless. He reads, secure in his intellectual superiority, unaware of the impending chaos his arrogance has set in motion.
Shouko's Costly Intervention
While Yuuji waits, Shouko discovers the bullies searching for his belongings. Recognizing the danger, she intervenes, physically shielding Yuuji's uniform and bravely declaring him her 'friend.' The bullies, surprised by her defiance, turn their aggression on her. Shouko suffers, struggling against their attacks, but her quiet determination to protect Yuuji's reputation, even at her own expense, shines through. Her intervention, selfless and without calculation, sets the stage for Yuuji's awakening.
The Price of Arrogance
Yuuji arrives, smugly anticipating the bullies' failure, only to witness Shouko being bullied in his place. The shock of this realization shatters his carefully constructed confidence. His internal monologue becomes a chaotic whirlwind of fear, self-blame, and frantic rationalization. He desperately grapples with the consequences: reporting the incident means Shouko's transfer, while intervening means physical harm. This internal struggle is visceral, showing a brilliant mind paralyzed by a truly unexpected moral dilemma, one his intellect cannot simply 'solve.'
A Hero's Painful Choice
As Yuuji's internal debate rages, he sees his bloody hands, a vision of the inevitable consequence. He frantically urges Shouko to call for help, but she remains silent, resolute in her defiance. In that moment, he understands: he must act. He rushes in, embracing Shouko and defiantly telling the bullies to back off. He sends Shouko away, proclaiming her 'in the way' to protect her from witnessing his certain defeat. He then faces the bullies alone, enduring a brutal beating, a painful atonement for his earlier arrogance.
Unspoken Bonds
Shouko, running from the scene, glimpses Yuuji's trembling shoulders, feeling her own helplessness but also a deepened resolve. When Yuuji returns home, battered but defiant, his mother already knows the truth, thanks to Shouko. His mother understands that Yuuji has grown beyond mere academics, learning to protect someone he cares for. She embraces Shouko, encouraging her to pursue her feelings, and Shouko reaffirms her enduring love for Yuuji, a love now tempered by sacrifice and shared understanding.
EPISODE REVIEWS

Hands down, this is one of the best episodes of this anime. The chemistry between Yuuji and Shouko really stands out here and is a major highlight. I’d even go as far as to say they make the best pairing in the series, even better than the main couple.

One of the strongest episodes in the entire franchise. It reframes a relationship that many viewers only saw as a running gag and gives it genuine emotional weight. The humor takes a back seat, and honestly, the episode is better for it.

AGH a Yuuji and Shouko episode!!😭🫶🏻 even if Shouko is a maniac and is literally obsessed with Yuuji, I LIVE for this pairing!! And this episode shows how sweet their relationship started✨️ Definitely my favorite episode in this season
