Magical★Explorer Anime Review: Isekai Gem or Skip This Season?

Is Magical★Explorer worth watching? This honest review breaks down the story, characters, and animation to help you decide if it's watchlist-worthy.

Fall 2026 is truly a great season for every anime lover, with so much good anime to enjoy. Among them is Magical★Explorer, also known as Magical Explorer: Reborn as a Side Character in a Fantasy Dating Sim, which premiered its first episode on October 3, 2026. To be honest, this anime has always been on my watchlist, not because it's funny or interesting, but simply because Takioto Kōsuke is voiced by my favourite voice actor, Shimazaki Nobunaga.

Since there are other amazing titles on my watchlist, like Black Clover Season 2, Keroro Gunsou☆, and Even the Student Council Has Its Holes!, I focused on them first. Once I had caught up to the latest episodes, I finally gave Magical★Explorer a try. Honestly, this anime is not what I had imagined, but I do have a lot of thoughts about it. So in this post, I will dive into it, and hopefully it will help you decide whether it's worth watching.

The Weird Isekai of Fall 2026: An Anime That Teaches You About "Eroge"

Before we dive deep into my Magical★Explorer review, please allow me to give everyone a few warnings first. Unlike most of my other posts, this one may contain some harsh comments, so if you are a fan of the show, please stop scrolling and leave now. Also, this anime is heavily focused on "eroge," which is short for "erotic game" in Japanese, so if you dislike dirty jokes or don't want to read about them, you may want to leave as well.

I'm not joking, I really felt like I had opened the wrong title while watching it, because it was so far from what I had expected. But I knew I hadn't, because the main character was the same as the one on the poster, and Shimazaki Nobunaga really was voicing him. With a title like Magical Explorer, at first I thought it was an Isekai anime about magic, or about exploring, but it turns out both guesses were wrong. For anyone who's confused, Magical Explorer is actually the name of an "erotic" game, and the anime is about that game.

The story of Magical★Explorer is actually not that complicated. Although it may seem like a spoiler, the story has nothing to hide, and sharing it wouldn't really affect anything, so I will just share it here. However, if you dislike spoilers or really want to avoid anything that might affect your watching experience, you may skip this part. Basically, the whole story is about the main character being reborn into the game's world as Takioto Kōsuke, where he starts an amazing romantic life with all the female characters.

In terms of Isekai life and setting, Magical★Explorer is different from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, but similar in some ways to the Overlord series. Our main character in Magical★Explorer didn't get a brand-new life or identity in the Isekai world. Instead, he inherited the identity of one of the game's characters. And just like in Overlord, after taking on their new identities, neither main character really follows the "book." Instead, they each start a new story. Takioto Kōsuke isn't supposed to have a harem in the "book," but he just has everyone falling in love with him instantly.

The Difference Between Magical★Explorer and Other Isekai: The Unique Harem of Takioto Kōsuke

There have been so many Isekai anime in recent years, and as hard as it is to say, most of them are actually quite similar. To help everyone quickly decide whether to give it a try, let me just share what makes this anime most unique. Once again, unlike my other posts, you may not like this answer, so if you are a Magical★Explorer fan, you may not want to read this part. Personally, after watching every episode of Magical★Explorer so far, I feel that the most unique thing about it, compared to other Isekai anime, is its harem.

With so many Isekai anime out there, there are many different kinds of female leads, and each of them is actually unique enough. So why do I say Magical★Explorer has a unique harem? In most Isekai anime, the main character gets his own original harem. In Magical★Explorer, however, Takioto didn't get his own harem, but rather, how should I put it, someone else's. In the game Magical★Explorer, Takioto is a side character and the main character is someone else, so he isn't supposed to have any romance routes in the first place.

This may sound very weird, but Takioto is having romance routes with someone else's harem. These girls weren't supposed to be his in the first place. But after the story starts and our main character becomes Takioto, everything changes completely from there. Since this is "eroge"-related, you may think it is something like one of the famous keywords, "Netorare," but it is similar, yet different.

Since we are diving into this topic, I will also touch on what "Netorare" and "Netori" are. Just for your information, "Netorare" means that your girl gets taken by someone else, while "Netori" means you are the one stealing someone else's girl. In Magical★Explorer, although Takioto is having romance routes with someone else's girls, the storyline changed completely after he arrived in that world, so you could actually say that Takioto is having every girl in a different timeline.

Beyond the Harem Story: What Will Happen Next?

Unfortunately, most of the time, Isekai harem anime don't have strong stories, and Magical★Explorer is one of them. I have caught up with the latest episodes, and although it is funny and the stories of Takioto winning the girls' hearts are cute, in the end, the story is just average. It is not that the story is bad, but it is not that interesting either. However, since Shimazaki Nobunaga is voicing the main character, and the anime is still unique in its own way, I personally hope there is something more to it.

If there really is something more waiting for us in terms of story, what will it look like? Let me be clear first: I haven't read the manga or the original light novel, so this is purely my guess. If I guess it right, it is just pure luck, not because I am trying to spoil anything. Most of the time, in Isekai works, the story will at some point go back to why the main character ended up in the Isekai world.

We don't actually know what happened in Magical★Explorer's world. Although there might be no reason for the main character becoming Takioto, I believe there is one. Otherwise, I don't think this work would be popular enough to get a manga, an anime, and even Shimazaki Nobunaga. Like a lot of game-related Isekai anime, the main character knows a lot about Magical★Explorer and is able to remember many of its details, so I think there is also some foreshadowing in there.

A new danger, or even a new bug or enemy, might have appeared. At this point, it's hard to guess exactly what it is, but I do think there is something in there. Besides, Hijiri Iori, the character who was supposed to get everything in the original game, has barely had any role in the story so far. This is definitely a bug in Magical★Explorer, so I think there is a high chance that something lies beneath it.

That said, I do think the upcoming story could be really fun, but of course, it might just end up being about Takioto having fun with his harem, so my guesses might be wrong.

Magical★Explorer Suggestion: Should You Watch It, and Who Will Enjoy It?

There is no perfect anime that suits everyone, and there is no bad anime that no one is interested in. Although I haven't had many positive things to say about it throughout this article, I do think this anime still suits some people. First of all, if you want to learn more unique Japanese words, then this anime is what you need. It really expands on the world of "eroge," and you might pick up a lot of new knowledge from it.

Rest assured, this is not an "ero" or hentai anime. Although it does expand on "eroge" and has some weird scenes, in the end, it is still an anime that is safe to watch. The dirty jokes are just some spice for the story, and if you dislike them, you can simply skip those parts. So giving it a try may really help you understand "eroge" more. Besides, if you don't have much time and are just looking for a funny and straightforward anime, Magical★Explorer is also for you.

Magical★Explorer doesn't have a strong or complicated story, but it is actually fun and easy to follow. Watching Takioto have sweet moments with the female characters, and seeing how tsundere they are, is funny, and I do think there are people who will enjoy it. Because the story is straightforward, you don't need to worry about any brutal scenes or anything that leaves you guys in huge shock, so it is actually safe and fun for most viewers.

I am not joking when I say Magical★Explorer is funny, and it is really something everyone can give a try. However, as I mentioned, the story is not that strong and still has a lot left to uncover, so if you are looking for something that is really worth your time, or a title you must invest in this season, you might need to look at other titles. Besides, I think this anime is easier to watch once it is fully released, so if you are interested in it, it is better to wait until every episode has aired.

Conclusion:

Thank you for reading this post. To be honest, unlike the anime in my other posts, Magical★Explorer is not one that I think most people would find interesting. Of course, if you are interested, please do give it a try, as it is fun in the end. But if you are still wondering whether it's worth watching, I hope this post has given you the answer.
