AnimeOshi: The Craziest Comedy You Aren't Watching — Dropkick On My Devil!

Looking for your next favorite comedy? Dive into our AnimeOshi guide to Dropkick On My Devil! Expore the plot, characters, and why this meta-humor gem is a must-watch.

Dropkick On My Devil! (Japanese name: 邪神ちゃんドロップキック Jashin-chan Dropkick) is a pure comedy anime. Since it isn't as famous as other comedy series like Gintama, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., or even Grand Blue Dreaming, I believe many of you may not have heard of it before. I actually used to skip over this anime, but since AnimeOshi is having an amazing campaign with the series, I took the opportunity to finally watch it myself.

After watching it myself, I found that it is a great comedy anime, and I quite enjoyed the show. I don't think I'm the only one who found the title a bit weird—I mean, what even is a "dropkick"? Since the anime doesn't explicitly explain it, I've realized the title actually refers to Jashin-chan's ultimate technique.

While the English name is a bit hard to understand at first, Jashin-chan (the girl with the snake lower body) is the main character, and her favorite move is the "Jashin-chan Dropkick," which fits the Japanese title perfectly. The technique involves Jashin-chan jumping high into the sky and landing a powerful kick. While you might wonder what's so special about it, it really gives me Kamen Rider vibes. Since this is a comedy filled with parodies, I don't think it's a coincidence that her dropkick looks exactly like the legendary Rider Kick.

Personally, I feel that Dropkick On My Devil! is a great anime, and I'd love to recommend it to everyone; however, I do have to add a "but." Although the show is great, there are reasons why it hasn't reached the same legendary status as Gintama or The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. While it will be a perfect fit for some of you, it might not be for everyone.

No anime is perfect; every show has an audience it suits and one it doesn't. In this post, I will dive deep into Dropkick On My Devil! to help you decide if this title is right for you. Before we start, please note that this post does not contain manga information since I am an "anime-only" viewer. However, it does contain some anime spoilers, so if you haven't watched it yet or want to avoid spoilers, please stop scrolling now!

Dropkick On My Devil!: Why is it such a crazy comedy?

Believe it or not, Dropkick On My Devil! is a pretty wild comedy. In this anime, we have a very lousy, you could even say "trash"—protagonist: Jashin-chan. She has every "trashy" personality trait you can imagine: she loves to gamble, she's a chronic liar, she'll do anything to reach her goals, and she treats her best friend like an ATM. Most importantly, she is constantly trying to kill the other main character, Yurine Hanazono (the gothic lolita girl).

Looking at everything Jashin-chan does, "trash" really is the only word to describe her. While this leads to plenty of funny moments and interactions—and even makes her a relatable character, for better or worse—the plot of Dropkick On My Devil! is very simple. Especially in Season 1, every episode basically revolves around the conflict of Jashin-chan vs. Yurine.

Since the show doesn't fully explain what exactly happened between Jashin-chan and Yurine throughout Season 1, I won't dive too deep as it would be a major spoiler. Basically, every episode involves Jashin-chan doing something terrible, followed by Yurine giving her a brutal punishment. One of the reasons why this anime is so crazy is the sheer variety of horrific ways Yurine finds to punish her.

Yurine uses an incredible range of methods and weapons against Jashin-chan. What's even more hilarious is that although Jashin-chan has her own "Rider Kick," she almost never lands a single hit! Even though Yurine is just a human, she is far stronger than Jashin-chan, making the "Dropkick" a pretty useless move. Because Jashin-chan has such a "trash" personality, her interactions with the (mostly) normal human Yurine are gold—I laughed a lot watching their scenes together.

Dropkick On My Devil!: Why is it such a unique comedy?

Dropkick On My Devil! is actually quite unique compared to other comedy titles. There are many great comedies out there like Me & Roboco, Mashle: Magic and Muscles, and even the legendary Beelzebub or Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, but even alongside those, this series stands out. There are two main reasons why I think Dropkick On My Devil! is so unique.

The first reason is the sheer "trashness" of Jashin-chan. In most comedy anime, even if the main character is a bit of a loser, they usually have some redeeming qualities. A great example is Gintoki Sakata from Gintama. Gintoki is similar to Jashin-chan in that they both love to gamble, lie constantly, and hate working—but Gintoki is ultimately a hero when the world needs him. Jashin-chan, on the other hand, doesn't really have any heroic moments. Because the plot is so simple, she never gets a chance to be the hero, which means that for the whole season, Jashin-chan is just... pure trash.

"The second season of Dropkick on My Devil!! continues the chaotic cohabitation of a demon, Jashin-chan, and the gothic girl, Yurine, filled with violent slapstick humor."

On AnimeOshi, 133 scouts have already left their reviews for Dropkick On My Devil! Season 2 (Dropkick on My Devil!! Dash), and the data currently shows an incredible 97% high score! Once again, this rating proves one thing: you definitely don't want to miss it!

The second reason is the violence. While it's common for characters in comedy anime to get into fights—like in Gintama, Sgt. Frog (Keroro), or even Crayon Shin-chan—those titles don't usually feature actual violence or brutal scenes. In Dropkick On My Devil!, even though these scenes are often censored with mosaics, every punishment is incredibly violent and brutal. They are still quite fun to watch, but believe me, once you see them, they will definitely leave a lasting impression!

Based on these two reasons, even as a huge fan of comedy anime, I still find Dropkick On My Devil! to be unique. It perfectly combines Jashin-chan's "trashness" with Yurine's brutality. Even though every episode is intense, it's still a total blast to watch!

Dropkick On My Devil!: Is this crazy comedy right for you?

Dropkick On My Devil! is a great and fun comedy anime. Personally, I quite like it, but as I said before, it isn't a show that suits everyone. While it definitely earns a high score as a comedy, the story itself isn't something that will necessarily impress you. For better or worse, the plot is so simple that it almost doesn't have a "story" at all.

Throughout the entirety of Season 1, every episode focuses almost exclusively on the interactions between Jashin-chan and Yurine. While the show introduces a lot of interesting side characters, if you are someone who looks for a deep story or a complex plot, Dropkick On My Devil! might not be for you. However, if you are looking for a hilarious, easy-to-watch comedy to make you laugh all day, Dropkick On My Devil! is a great choice!

Besides the story, I have one more personal observation: a major concern for some might be how much Japanese anime you've watched before. You might wonder why I'm asking, but much of the humor comes from parodies and the use of "slang" or "rough Japanese." If you are new to anime or haven't watched many Japanese-language works, some of the jokes might be difficult to understand.

While the plot is simple, you really need some background knowledge to appreciate the "dirty Japanese" humor. Additionally, the show focuses heavily on Dragon Ball parodies; if you've never seen Dragon Ball, you might miss out on a lot of the fun. You don't need to do any "homework" to understand the story of Dropkick On My Devil!, but you might need some to understand why it's so funny. It's hard for me to explain every joke, and as they say—explaining a joke is like magic: once you reveal the trick, it stops being funny!

Conclusion:

Thank you for reading! In this post, I've introduced Dropkick On My Devil! and broken down who this anime is for—and who might want to skip it. If you are a fan of Gintama, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., or Grand Blue Dreaming, this is definitely a show you don't want to miss. It truly has a high level of comedy and a great sense of parody.

However, if you are new to anime, or if you've only watched top-tier "serious" shows but haven't explored the comedy genre yet, it might be better to start with other titles first. Once you get a feel for the unique tone and "funny points" of Japanese comedy, you can come back to this series anytime. Dropkick On My Devil! is absolutely worth watching, so once you've done your "homework" on Japanese comedy, give this amazing anime a try!
