READTHROUGH
A New Semester Begins
October heralds a fresh start at Duel Academy. Judai Yuki, ever the spirited Slifer Red, greets his second year with characteristic enthusiasm. Meanwhile, Chronos de Medici and Vice-Principal Napoleon, caught in their endless administrative machinations, discuss grand plans for the school's reputation. They speak of Edo Phoenix, a world-renowned duelist set to transfer, a name that promises both prestige and perhaps, unforeseen complications.
The Mysterious Challenger
Perched on a cliff, Judai shouts his joy to the ocean, only to be met by Edo Phoenix, a polite young man in a stark white suit. Edo, calm and respectful, immediately requests a duel, surprising Judai and the onlookers Sho Marufuji and Tome-san. The atmosphere shifts, the lightheartedness of the new term giving way to an unexpected, serious challenge. Judai, ever eager, welcomes the unknown.
Ojama Yellow and the Scrutiny of Manjoume
The duel begins, and Edo's first move, summoning 'Ojama Yellow' in defense, draws immediate ire from Jun Manjoume. Manjoume cannot fathom a pro using such a card, yet Edo remains unflustered, setting a single card and ending his turn. The onlookers, including Asuka Tenjouin, speculate, sensing something beneath Edo's unusual choices. He maintains an almost unsettling air of mystery.
The Scrappy Deck
A brief flashback reveals Edo's unusual preparation: earlier that morning, he visited Tome-san's shop, asking for random, unsold card packs. He assembled a deck on the spot, choosing quantity over quality, any forty cards sufficing for his purpose. Tome-san's bewilderment at the time now makes chilling sense. This decision speaks volumes about Edo's supreme, almost arrogant, confidence in his raw skill.
A Call Mid-Duel
Back in the duel, Judai summons 'Elemental Hero Sparkman' and swiftly dispatches 'Ojama Yellow,' feeling the familiar thrill of battle. Edo, however, seems entirely unbothered, ending his turn with a knowing smirk. Then, shockingly, Edo's phone rings, and he answers it in the middle of the match. Asuka, Sho, and Manjoume are outraged by this blatant disrespect, but Edo calmly explains he is in the middle of a 'small test,' his words dripping with casual dismissal.
Saiou's Prophecy
The voice on the other end belongs to Saiou Takuma, a chilling figure cloaked in white. He speaks of fate, tarot cards, and a predetermined defeat for Edo, a necessary step for his growth. Saiou instructs Edo to observe Judai's spirit, hinting at a larger, darker plot. Edo accepts this destiny without question, a chilling display of subservience that casts a long, ominous shadow over the duel.
The True Power of Zerato
With the call ended, Edo returns to the duel with a new, terrifying intensity. He activates 'The Sanctuary in the Sky,' summons 'Warrior of Zera,' and sacrifices it for his ace monster, 'Archlord Zerato.' With a cold command, Edo discards a card to unleash Zerato's effect, destroying Judai's Sparkman. A brutal direct attack follows, sending Judai reeling, his Life Points plummeting. The golden warrior towers over him, a stark symbol of Edo's unleashed, hidden power.
Fate Versus Free Will
Despite the heavy blow, Judai rises, summoning 'Elemental Hero Clayman' and swiftly transforming it into 'Elemental Hero Clay Guardman,' managing to deal some damage to Edo. Edo then launches into a lecture, asserting that every move in the duel is predetermined by fate. Judai, ever the optimist, counters that dueling is about the excitement of the unknown, a clash of philosophies that defines their battle. For a moment, Edo glimpses Winged Kuriboh, recognizing the 'special nature' Saiou spoke of.
A Narrow Escape
Edo, seeking to fulfill his predetermined loss, attempts to finish Judai, retrieving 'Archlord Zerato' and attacking again. In a desperate move, Judai activates 'The Flute of Summoning Kuriboh,' bringing forth 'Winged Kuriboh' to absorb the attack. The small spirit shields Judai, saving his Life Points from zero. Edo is momentarily impressed by Judai's resilience and his unwavering smile, even at the brink of defeat. Sho and Asuka breathe a collective sigh of relief.
The Day of Destiny
Another flashback to Saiou underscores the sinister grand design. Saiou explains that Edo must experience defeat at Judai's hands, not for the outcome, but to observe a rare dueling spirit and awaken a new power for the
Judai's Comeback and Victory
Judai begins his final turn, summoning 'Elemental Hero Bubbleman' to draw more cards, then retrieving 'Sparkman.' He fuses his heroes into 'Elemental Hero Tempest,' a powerful monster whose effect allows him to discard a card to prevent its destruction. Then, with a surprise move, Judai activates 'De-Fusion,' splitting Tempest back into its three components for a triple-strike. Edo's Life Points vanish as the dust settles, and Judai shouts his triumphant, 'Gotcha!' Edo, with a mysterious smile, accepts his fate.
The Pro Revealed
After the duel, Edo thanks Judai and departs. Suddenly, Sho screams, having found a magazine identifying Edo Phoenix as a world-famous pro duelist. The group is stunned; Manjoume cannot believe a pro lost to a Slifer Red. Asuka immediately understands: Edo wasn't using his true deck. Judai, far from being discouraged by this revelation, is electrified, his excitement for a true rematch palpable.
Tyranno Kenzan's Arrival
As evening descends, Chronos and Napoleon await Edo at the docks, oblivious he has come and gone. Instead, they are met by a boisterous, muscular student who leaps from a boat, introducing himself as Tyranno Kenzan. He demands Obelisk Blue dorm placement despite his Ra Yellow rank, grabbing Chronos by the collar. Kenzan, a self-proclaimed 'dinosaur-user,' signals more chaos for the academy, ending the day with a raucous laugh that echoes over the harbor.
