Magic-based settings might be some of the hardest to innovate in, but Atelier manages to do it by introducing drawings, and thus arts to some level, into the mix. It also reaches a middle point between wish it and it happens and long rules and exposition systems.
The protagonist combines youthful curiosity with genuine passion for magic, thus challenging her supposed in-setting impossibility to practice it, resulting in a kind of main character that goes against the norms and status quo.
But her misguided eagerness to learn ends up hurting her dearest one, thus gaining her hero´s calling with a proper sense of urgency and a clear motivation to redeem herself.
All of that, combined with a phenomenal visual presentation, makes for a compelling beginning.
If I were to complain about something, it's the way the music is used, it does not accompany the emotional moments the best way.
