I did NOT expect that. From the beginning of the episode, the tonal shift is palpable, but never would I thought it'll come this far. I like how at the end Elaina admitted that she is inexperience, she lives in her bubble in a way. I do wonder is there any limit on being a witch.

What a dark and heartbreaking chapter. It’s best to leave the past as a memory and learn from it so we can move forward with our lives.

So… the anime has already shown that it isn’t afraid of being dark, but this is something else—in a good way. Better animation, some extra worldbuilding, and the foreshadowing was great. It also touches on some very sensitive topics, so viewer discretion is advised. A must-watch
