episode 1 sets up an amazing premise when Raishin arrives in Liverpool with Yaya. The train battle scene is absolutely stunning and sets a high bar for the rest of the show. I love how their dynamic feels immediately natural and genuinely entertaining.
For an anime released in 2013, it looks really good and could give some modern anime a run for their money. However, the art style in certain scenes does reveal its age and during dramatic moments the brightness is amplified to the point of being mildly disruptive. As for the plot, it does a good job of explaining the world on a surface level while also establishing the protagonist's main objective. The soundtrack is good, although the OP isn't really my cup of tea.
The inconsistency of the writing happens pretty early. The girl in the train was taking the jokes all in stride, and knew the dynamic of the main characters. Yet, she takes what Yaya says at face value and slaps Raishin. The other is when the professor says that if he joined the Evening Party he will die, but later during a duel he says attacking the puppeteer is illegal. The lighting is too harsh, the characters are basically glowing. The sideview of the characters look funny, but a better art style than Konosuba. The banter between the main characters are hilarious, Kadokawa has a knack for comedic/witty conversations.
