It is a change of pace compared to Higurashi. This one seems to be more of mystery/thriller than horror, as it sets up the cast for what might be an eventual "Who done it?" scenario. Any curious mind would be intrigued by secrets hidden within.

Episode Context

As the very first episode of 26, this is pure foundation, establishing the Rokkenjima setting, the sprawling Ushiromiya family tree, and the central mystery of Beatrice and the gold that will drive the entire series. It marks the beginning of the 'Legend of the Golden Witch' arc, prioritizing character introductions and atmospheric groundwork over action. Everything planted here, the family tensions, Kinzo's desperation, the witch's legend, becomes the fuel for the escalating supernatural horror and locked-room mysteries that define the episodes ahead.
