Ulysses 31 Episode 1: Vengeance of the Gods

The episode opens with the title card, then a sweeping view of the magnificent Troy space base, a marvel of engineering. Inside, Ulysses, a man burdened by duty and a pressing personal deadline, discusses the political turmoil on Earth with Priam. He must return before the next comet, or his wife, Penelope, faces an unwanted remarriage. This establishes the hero's core motivation early, a ticking clock above all else.

A festive celebration for Ulysses' son, Telemachus, provides a brief, warm interlude. Ulysses presents a large gift, from which Nono, a small, acrobatic robot, springs forth, delighting everyone with his antics. The happy moment soon gives way to a heartfelt departure as Ulysses and his crew say goodbye to their Trojan hosts. Telemachus waves enthusiastically, shouting a promise to remember his friends.

The colossal Odysseus spacecraft detaches from Troy, its central iris glowing with a deep green light as it prepares for interstellar travel. The ship accelerates, becoming a streak against the stars, embarking on its planned trajectory toward Earth. Inside, the routine settles, and the ship's artificial garden dome offers a comforting, green space where Telemachus and Nono play, unaware of the lurking danger. This tranquil period serves to lull the audience into a false sense of security.

An alarm shatters the peace on the bridge as Shyrka, the ship's computer, detects an unknown planet directly in their path. This world is not on any star chart, a cosmic anomaly. Ulysses and Nestor observe the dark, shimmering orb with confusion and concern, as Shyrka reports a faint, unidentifiable energy signature. Despite the warning, Ulysses decides to maintain their course, instructing Shyrka to log all observations.

A massive pulse of white light erupts from the planet, disabling the Odysseus's shields and causing the ship to flicker violently. The beam solidifies, becoming a pillar of energy that engulfs the ship's exterior sensors. In the garden dome, Telemachus and Nono watch in terror as the light pierces the roof, shattering the dome. A glowing energy sphere surrounds them, pulling them out into the void, as Ulysses screams his son's name, helpless to stop it.

On the planet's jagged, crystalline surface, Telemachus awakens in a cold chamber. A young girl with blue skin and glowing eyes, Thémis, approaches him, assuring him he is safe from her. She introduces her brother, Noumaios, who is in a trance-like state, and explains they are both prisoners, like Telemachus, taken by the followers of a terrible entity. Thémis reveals they are all to be sacrificed to the machine god, the Cyclops, which feeds on their energy and light.

Thémis, possessing psychic powers, tells Telemachus she can help him reach his father. She places her hands on his head, instructing him to focus his thoughts on Ulysses and the Odysseus. A glowing orb of mental energy forms between them, broadcasting their message across the vastness of space. Back on the bridge, Ulysses clutches his head, receiving the psychic vision of his son trapped, his eyes burning with renewed determination.

Ignoring Nestor's warnings, Ulysses races to the hangar, where Nono, having escaped, insists on joining him. They launch in a small red exploration module, descending rapidly through the purple clouds, dodging crystalline spires. Ulysses skillfully pilots the craft towards the energy source he sensed, landing on a crystal ledge overlooking the temple. He and Nono hide, observing the purple-robed monks below.

The monks begin a deep, rhythmic chant, their foreheads pulsing with dark red light as the High Priest leads a ritual to awaken the Cyclops. The ground shakes, and the central temple opens to reveal a colossal mechanical entity with a single, massive red eye. This eye slowly opens, glowing with malevolent energy, then tracks the Odysseus in the sky. The monks, emboldened, command the Cyclops to unleash its divine wrath upon the ship.

The Cyclops fires a massive energy beam, narrowly missing the Odysseus and obliterating a nearby ice moon. On the bridge, Nestor struggles to defend the ship as it engages in a fierce dogfight with the mechanical god. Laser batteries light up the atmosphere, but the Odysseus's weapons cannot penetrate the temple's divine shield. Meanwhile, Ulysses infiltrates the lower levels of the temple, slicing through metal doors with his laser sword. He finally reaches the main hall, finding Telemachus and Thémis imprisoned in glowing blue stasis pods.

Nono spots the Cyclops preparing to fire another devastating beam, this time directly at Ulysses and the children. With surprising resolve, the small robot grabs a discarded radar dish and holds it like a shield. He positions himself directly in the beam's path, and the energy reflects, bouncing back to strike the Cyclops's own eye. The machine god's sensors overload, sparks fly, and its single eye explodes in a burst of red energy and black smoke.

With the Cyclops destroyed, the stasis pods shatter, and Ulysses catches Telemachus in his arms, quickly freeing Thémis. Noumaios remains unconscious, weakened by his ordeal. Ulysses urges them to leave immediately as the entire temple begins to collapse around them. They scramble into the shuttle, launching just as the temple is consumed by fire and the planet disintegrates into glowing fragments. The small craft accelerates away, escaping the shockwave.

Safely back on the Odysseus, Ulysses leads the children to the bridge, where a relieved Nestor points to a massive energy signature appearing in the void. A colossal, furious face of an ancient man, Zeus, King of the Gods, forms in the nebula. His voice booms through the ship, declaring his divine judgment. A swirling black hole opens, its gravity inexorably pulling the Odysseus inward despite Nestor's desperate attempts to engage the thrusters. They are dragged into the dark vortex.

The Odysseus passes through the event horizon into a realm of impossible geometry, where giant Greek columns float in space. Zeus pronounces that as punishment for their hubris, all of Ulysses' companions will be frozen in time until they reach the kingdom of Hades. Ulysses watches in horror as Nestor and the entire crew are transformed into rigid, grey statues, their life extinguished. The ship falls into a deathly silence, broken only by the hum of the remaining systems.

Ulysses walks through the silent, ghostly hallways of his ship, looking at the frozen faces of his friends, filled with guilt and responsibility. He finds Nestor, touches his cold, stone-like hand, and bows his head in silent grief. Reunited with Telemachus, Thémis, and Nono—the only other conscious beings—he finds Noumaios frozen as well, comforting a crying Thémis. Standing before the great iris, Ulysses makes a solemn vow to return home, his face set with grim determination as the Odysseus drifts into the unknown, its epic journey just beginning.
