The OP is the greatest. The dilemma of accepting one’s animal instincts is represented naturally here through Kaneki’s reluctance. The portrayal of his friendship with Hide is perfect. The animation is top-tier, and the music direction also feels good in this episode.

This series so far gives me a very primal vibe from the characters. Whenever there are scenes of bloody battles involving violent ghouls, it reminds me very much of "survival of the fittest". Kaneki's humanity towards his friend makes me question whether ghouls can feel the same.

Incredible episode. It further expands on how ghouls could coexist with humans in secret, and the dangers of people even closest to you. The reality shown by the senior was bloody and shocking.

This episode establishes several things at once, which make the world come to life and realism in terms of how ghouls could exist in such a modern society. The portrayals in this sense are done really well.

S1 EP2. I like the idea that this episode shows how strong and powerful Kaneki is, I love how the OP shows how lonely and complicated being a ghoul is. But I respect the ideologies of the owner of the coffee shop, it goes to show that being bad and good is a choice.

Kaneki finding difficult in balancing his human and ghoul side. Still refuse to eat meat. The cafe manager Yoshimura welcomes him & offers coffee. Touka is such a badass but clearly carries a lot of weight. Watching the internal battle between Kaneki's human side and his new hunger is genuinely painful.

This episode is just pain and realization. The slow understanding of what happened hits harder than any action scene. You can feel his denial. It’s not dramatic screaming it’s quiet panic. That’s what makes it worse 😔

Watching Kaneki struggle with his new biology is painful but necessary world-building. Touka’s "tough love" introduction sets the tone for the Anteiku dynamic perfectly. It’s not just about gore, it’s about the agony of not belonging anywhere. Watch and you'll get hooked. ✨

Gradual introduction to side characters, storyline unfolding nicely, the extensions/weapons looks so weird but keeps me hooked!

Rize’s purple hair + red eyes combo? Girl was serving looks and danger. Animation on her smile and stare was creepy but kinda mesmerizing. Vibe flirty but off, gave me instant chills like “this girl is not okay”.

Seeing Kaneka struggle between choosing his ghoul life and his human life is interesting. I feel bad for him, and Touka is really handing it to him XD. However, seeing him getting a new life is nice, and I hope it works out for him. The kid has been through so much already.

This feels like a late 90’s early 2000’s inspired gem. I am already in love with this intro song!

Episode 2 is about finding your place, belonging. and the woes of imposter syndrome. That lays the foundation to see consequences, good and bad, resolved in a satisfying way.

Our boy is going through a mid-life crisis at 18. He’s looking at a ham sandwich like it's a war crime, and his stomach is doing backflips. He wanders into a coffee shop called Anteiku and realizes the barista isn't just making lattes...she’s holding some heavy secrets.

In this episode Kaneki really struggles with being a half human and half ghoul and refuses to eat human. Meanwhile, Touka shows no sympathy here for him, but I do get Touka for being that way even though there's no backstory yet it's understandable how ghoul suffers too.

Kaneki struggling with being half-ghoul was interesting to watch. Dude couldn't even eat regular food anymore. The way they show his hunger through hallucinations of Rize is creepy but a cool concept. Animation stayed clean. Really feeling his desperation.

no jumpscares. no chase scenes. just a guy sitting alone unable to eat, watching his whole normal life become unreachable. that IS the horror and it's way more effective than anything loud could've been. touka introduced cold and i'm glad they didn't soften her one bit.

Episode 2 introduces intriguing characters who expand the lore, hinting at alliances and conflicts that promise to get even more intense.

EPISODE CONTEXT

Following the premiere's shocking transformation, 'Incubation' is the essential second step — forcing Kaneki (and the audience) to sit with the consequences rather than rush past them. It establishes the central tension between human morality and ghoul instinct that will drive the entire twelve-episode season. This episode also lays critical groundwork for Kaneki's eventual integration into the ghoul community and the looming introduction of CCG investigators, whose presence will dramatically escalate the conflict in episodes to come.
