The episode is well crafted in building tension. From Kaneki's ordinary life, events gradually turn dark and frightening until a tragedy occurs that completely changes his fate.

Episode Context

As the first of twelve episodes, 'Tragedy' is pure foundation, establishing the world's rules, introducing the central cast, and detonating the inciting event that drives Kaneki's entire arc across the season. Everything that follows stems from what happens here. The next episode, 'Incubation,' picks up the immediate aftermath as Kaneki confronts the terrifying reality of his transformation and the hunger that comes with it.
