📖 SYNOPSIS
A broke kid from a small town that basically gets wiped off the map, Chen Ping'an is left with nothing when the Li Zhu Grotto-Heaven collapses — nothing except one job: escort a group of children across a dangerous world to the Great Sui Dynasty so they can study. No army, no magic sword, no grand cultivation base — just a young guy with stubbornness and a sense of duty that's way too heavy for his shoulders.
This 27-episode ONA from Cloud Art adapts part of a massive web novel, and the world-building reflects that depth. You've got historical Chinese settings layered with fantasy elements — martial artists, supernatural threats, Dali cavalry hunting them down — and it all feels lived-in rather than decorative. The early episodes do a good job establishing how outmatched Chen Ping'an is, which makes his growth feel earned rather than handed to him. A Liang, a mysterious swordsman who drifts in and out of the story, adds this cool unpredictable energy whenever he shows up.
The tone sits somewhere between quiet character moments and genuinely tense action sequences. It's less flashy spectacle and more about the weight of carrying people through a world that wants to kill them.
If you liked the political depth and period setting of Joy of Life, or the blend of martial arts and supernatural worldbuilding in Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, this scratches a similar itch. Fans of Heaven Official's Blessing who want something grittier and more grounded should also give it a look.
