Pleasure is the only thing Yonosuke lives for. Set in Edo-period Japan, this single OVA follows him from his youth through decades of chasing desire — courtesans, wandering, wealth lost and regained. His father disowns him at 18 for his hedonistic ways, kicking off 16 years of drifting and indulgence before an inheritance eventually pulls him back into respectability. On the surface it sounds like a straightforward period piece about a libertine, but there's more going on underneath. The psychological weight of a life built entirely around appetite — what it costs, what it reveals about the society around him — gives it an emotional texture that lingers. The Edo-period setting is rendered with genuine care, pulling from Saikaku Ihara's 17th-century novel, so you're getting something with real literary roots rather than a hollow premise. It's quiet and unhurried in the way older anime OVAs often are, more interested in atmosphere and character than plot momentum. If you appreciated the meditative pace of something like Fuyu no Hi or wanted a historically grounded counterpart to more stylized period works, this sits in that same space. It's not an easy watch in the sense of being fun or light — it's emotionally dense and deliberately paced.
