Episode Context

As Episode 1, this is the series' entire foundation, there is no prior episode to reference, and everything here exists to establish Ephtal's circumstances, the state of this new world, and the dramatic gap between his sage-level abilities and what this society understands magic to be. The introduction of Ephtal and Merlin signals the central dynamic the season will build around. What this episode sets up is the long climb: a master operating in a world of beginners, and the conflict and discovery that premise promises.
