The first part of the episode is so unserious with him just running away from his attendants then the second part came and the tone of the show definitely changed to a darker vibe.

I was NOT ready for this. It starts off all colorful and lighthearted and then out of nowhere it turns into a full-on bloodbath by the end of the first episode. The tonal shift completely caught me off guard and I'm honestly impressed by how well it was executed. And Tokiyuki as a protagonist is genuinely adorable — his whole deal of being a coward who just runs away is so endearing and refreshing compared to your typical shonen hero. The animation quality is top notch too, CloverWorks really delivered here.

Beautiful animation & bold colors with backgrounds that look like they were painted. A strong start to the season. I love Tokiyuki’s gremlin energy & how eccentric Yorishige is.

This one was really misleading in a good way. I wasn’t prepared for how graphic it would get. The animation and art style were superb, and CloverWorks really delivered again. The movement was smooth too. Definitely expecting big things from this series.

Man, that escalated quickly. One minute Tokiyuki is being a lazy cutie, the next his whole world is literally on fire. The art style is gorgeous—CloverWorks isn't playing around—but the sudden gore is a total mood shift.

It's from the same studio that bring us Spy X Family, Cloverwork, I expect no less than stellar animation, with a simple head turn still looking fluid. The story itself is intriguing, with Tokiyuki someone who does mostly hide and dodge. That second half plot twist was shocking.

Solid opening presentation, superb soundtrack & animation. MC showing its core personality very well. sets the tone well enough to keep us engaged. Good sense of humor established on this episode, mixes things up from the serious moments that appear from time to time.

A dramatic opening showing the fall of the Kamakura shogunate. Tokiyuki’s life changes instantly, and the mix of tragedy and strange humor sets the tone for the series.

10/10 animation, peak writing, and S tier story! I just love how Tokiyuki completely changes during the heat of the battle! interesting take on a overpowered MC trope. Definitely a must watch anime!

EPISODE CONTEXT

As episode one of twelve, 'May 22nd' is pure foundation — establishing Tokiyuki's character, his world, and the political landscape that's about to shatter. Everything here is setup by design, building the normalcy that subsequent episodes will dismantle. The introduction of Suwa Yorishige signals the larger narrative machinery beginning to turn, pointing toward the upheaval and survival-driven adventure that will define the rest of the season.
