Synopsis
Born in a research lab from genome-editing experiments, Charlie is a humanzee, half-human, half-chimpanzee. Rescued as an infant by the Animal Liberation Alliance, an eco-terrorist group, he's raised by foster parents in Missouri and eventually sent to a normal high school at fifteen. He makes one friend, a girl named Lucy, and for a brief moment things feel almost ordinary. Then the ALA comes back, radicalized and ready to use Charlie as the face of their cause, whether he wants it or not. This TV series, adapted from the seinen manga by studio Bellnox Films, is a social thriller dressed in sci-fi clothes. The genre trappings are there: genetic experimentation, a hybrid protagonist, extremist factions, but the core is really about identity, belonging, and what happens when society can't decide if you're a person or a symbol. Charlie's caught between a world that sees him as a freak and an organization that sees him as a weapon, and the tension just builds from there. The vibe sits somewhere between Parasyte: The Maxim and Tokyo Ghoul: that same feeling of a protagonist whose body makes them an outsider, navigating a world that's hostile by default. If you liked Ajin: Demi-Human's exploration of what rights non-humans deserve, this is working in similar territory but with more grounded, character-driven drama. Set in the U.S., which gives it a different texture than most anime. Worth keeping on your radar for 2026.

My favorite part was Jihan trying to be friends with Charlie despite what his brother said it was a pure moment.
The discovery of the heads in the truck was a shocking reminder of how brutal the ALA can be.
That ending left me wanting so much more a second season needs to happen now.
I honestly dont know who Charlie's real parents are. Hanna and Bart raised him but Ava clearly loves him and has sacrificed so much. It's a complex situation and I feel for Charlie not knowing where he belongs. It makes you think about what truly makes a family.
Seeing Charlie's flashbacks and how he reacted to his parents being gone made me think about his unique way of processing emotions.
The supermarket scene was tough to watch. People are so quick to judge what they dont understand and it felt real.
Ava saying "I am a mother of two" changed everything for me and I totally didn't see it coming.
The doctor talking about Ava's age and how much she suffered during childbirth was just heartbreaking.
The very end with Ava's message and the second humanzee reveal left me stunned. I was not ready for that twist.

I still can't believe Charlie has a brother. Eva's dying words hit me hard and the implications are huge.
I really loved how Charlie didn't just go for some big fight or run away at the end. It felt way more real that he chose his own path and understood his own mind, that's what truly makes him human. It shows he's growing beyond what anyone expects.
I'm losing my mind about Rivera. Sometimes I want to punch my laptop when I see him. Good pacing in this episode. Also I like the reference to the bluebird's wife and the cliffhanger at the end makes me curious about the next episode.
This one is just some chilling episode, but yeah, some cliffhanging at the end, but out of nowhere, Charlie's dad mentions the Beatles. I love the reference to one of these.
That supermarket scene was intense, when the crowd turned on Charlie but Jihan standing up for him and Seymour shutting down the prejudice was just what I needed to see
I felt so bad for Charlie in the hospital trying to communicate with his mom. When Eva spelled out "I am a mother of 2" my jaw actually dropped what a twist
Charlie going from innocent grocery shopping to facing a hateful mob it was a gut punch. The way society just turns on him is chilling.
Rivera’s mind games and that whole Bluebeard’s Castle metaphor were really something to think about, it got me hooked.
Lucy being kidnapped by the ALA was a gut punch, the tension was through the roof from the start.
Charlie in full hybrid rescue mode was awesome to see his primate agility in the urban shadows was something else.
