READTHROUGH
The Raining City and a World of Pain
The episode opens with the stark declaration: "This is a world where murder and torture are legalized." Heavy rain lashes a grimy, neon-lit city alley, the perfect backdrop for such a grim reality. Stacked crates and dripping pipes emphasize the forgotten corners where such acts might unfold. It's a bleak introduction, immediate and unapologetic in its premise.
Shuu in the Alley
Amidst the downpour, we see Shuu for the first time, not as a hero, but as a victim. His blue hair is soaked, and he coughs, clutching his chest in raw, desperate pain. His red-rimmed eyes betray an utter exhaustion, water and sweat blurring his vision as he struggles for breath. He looks utterly broken, a figure of profound suffering.
Hera's Bloody Proposition
Out of the shadows steps Hera, a shocking contrast with his pink hair and blood-smeared face. He smiles broadly, almost maniacally, holding out his hands as if offering a gift, asking Shuu, "拷問とか興味ない? (Torture, interested?)" His cheerfulness is deeply unsettling against the backdrop of Shuu's pain and the visible blood on his military jacket. Shuu can only stare, too exhausted to react.
The Torturer's Calling
Hera's smile falters for a moment before returning even wider, reassuring Shuu that his bloodied state is "へーきへーき。いつものことだから。(It's fine, it's fine. It's an everyday thing.)" He talks about Shuu being "結構向いてる (well-suited)" for something, gesturing towards an unconscious man at Shuu's feet. Hera then pronounces the word, "拷問 (Torture)," with a playful, sinister wink.
An Apartment, a New Life
The scene shifts abruptly from the dark alley to an apartment building at dusk, lights flickering on. Inside, we see a wall adorned with various whips and implements, suggesting this is a professional space. Shuu sits, still exhausted, his red eyes half-closed, but no longer directly in distress. This new setting implies a reluctant acceptance of his situation.
Hera's Seduction and Reasoning
Hera appears from behind a doorframe, bare-chested with a towel wrapped around his pink hair, asking Shuu, "君、高校生でしょ。(You're a high school student, aren't you?)" He casually declares himself a "フリーの拷問師 (freelance torturer)." When Shuu questions why he'd be suited, Hera smirks, explaining, "暇と暴力をもてあましてたから。(Because you had time and violence to spare.)" He dismisses Shuu's explanation of a street fight as mere "正当防衛 (self-defense)."
The Philosophy of Beauty and Horror
Hera gently lifts Shuu's chin, his gaze intense, and recites a chilling philosophy: "美しきものは恐ろしきものの発端に他ならず。(Beautiful things are nothing but the beginning of terrible things.)" He then adds, with a smug wink, that "美人は拷問師に向いてるらしいよ。(Beautiful people seem well-suited to be torturers.)" Shuu receives this pronouncement with a thoughtful, unreadable stare, his red eyes reflecting a new, dark contemplation.
Accepting the Instrument
The atmosphere softens briefly with the sight of an incense diffuser, but Hera's soft laughter soon brings us back. He extends a braided whip towards Shuu, offering it with a simple, "これあげる。(I'll give you this.)" Shuu initially questions the offer but slowly, deliberately, takes the whip from Hera's hand, his expression still neutral. The transfer of the instrument marks a silent, uneasy acceptance of his new path.
First Names, First Steps
Hera watches Shuu with a pleased, knowing smile as Shuu brings the whip to his nose, sniffing it with curious, focused red eyes. Hera comments that it suits him, then realizes he hasn't asked for Shuu's name. He introduces himself as "ヘラ (Hera)," and Shuu responds simply, "シュウ (Shuu)." This exchange, understated and formal, solidifies the beginning of their professional and personal entanglement.
