Episode Context

Coming off the resolution of Lady Lihua's poisoning arc in episode four, episode five serves as a narrative bridge. Maomao has proven her value, and now the story explores what that means for her place within the inner court. The focus shifts toward an upcoming garden party, a major social event that will clearly serve as the backdrop for new mysteries and power plays in subsequent episodes. At roughly the one-fifth mark of this 24-episode season, this is classic foundation-laying that rewards patient viewers.
