I was enjoying myself with this episode, a bit of a side adventure from all the drama and poison to just sit back and having a relaxing moment together. I was flabbergasted with the question at the end, had to end in a very uncomfortable matter, but it still peaked my interest.

It was funny watching Mao try to make Jinshi seem “ugly” or “common,” because no matter how hard she tried, he still looked beautiful in her mind. It was interesting to see them switch roles. She was able to tell him firsthand about the cruel way women are treated in her world.

Life in the Palace is full of weird orders and demands for Maomao, but none has been more weirder than being asked to put make-up on her own boss. Asked to make Jinshi look like someone else, she has a entertaining but hard challenge to face, but if only that was the end of it.

I never thought I’d see a commoner Jinshi, yet he’s still handsome. Maomao putting lipstick on him and realizing it could start a war was hilarious. The ending is bittersweet, showing how women are treated as objects—sold and discarded once pregnant.

I know a few episodes before I said that I'm not the biggest shipper of Mao and Jinshi. But they're kinda looking like a great couple in this episode though.

I love the occasional makeup change of the characters the brings a fresh look to them. The realism of the application of the makeup along with detailed explanation was very educational. A big cliffhanger with a plot releveant reveal that must not be missed as a viewer.

While slow, this episode was very grounded and yet actually kept my attention quite well. Seeing Maomao and Jinshi interact continues to be the highlight of this show for me. The character writing and interactions really keep me interested and leave me wanting more.

Both characters are growing now, especially in how Maomao deals with others. Jinshi’s presence still adds that subtle tension. It feels natural and not forced.

The atmosphere here is especially immersive, and I love how it pulls you in slowly. There’s a calm surface, but you can feel something underneath. Maomao navigating this kind of environment is always interesting to watch. The moment where she carefully observes people’s reactions instead of focusing on the situation itself is such a highlight. It shows how she reads people just as much as she reads clues. That balance makes this episode feel layered.

The art of make-up truly is amazing. Our Maomao was so good at it. Jinshi is way too good looking, despite downgrading his looks he's looks are still charming and he looks so innocent. Lol about Jinshi's reactions when Maomao was assessing him physically.

the pleasure district tour is lowkey eye opening for Jinshi and the courtesan conversation gets darker than expected. transitional ep but the chemistry between these two carries it as usual

Jinshi in a common man disguise is hilarious, still a 10/10 for his makeup! Maomao’s face when she’s "buying" him is peak comedy. Analytically, seeing the city’s underbelly through her eyes adds such real realism. That ending cliffhanger though... 👀

FEMBOY JINSHI LMAOOO!! Maomao is doing god’s work for real. I need an episode where Maomao fully turns our boy into a maiden, lol.
The ending felt a bit tense though. I sense Maomao’s past traumatic arc is about to load...

EPISODE CONTEXT

Coming off the intensity of 'Lead,' where Maomao's investigative instincts drove the narrative, episode 17 deliberately downshifts to invest in the Maomao-Jinshi relationship before the season's final act. Positioned at the two-thirds mark of a 24-episode run, this character-focused detour is strategic—it deepens the emotional stakes heading into the Lakan arc, which promises to escalate both personal and political complexity through the final stretch.
