Hayama’s personality balanced the episode nicely. He’s experienced like Gen, but way more socially functional 😭 so he ends up exposing how awkward Gen really is.

Hayama was honestly such a good addition because he immediately notices what viewers already knew 💀 Gen acts WAY softer around Shizuku than he thinks he does.

The pacing was slower again, but the dialogue carried it this time. Most of the entertainment came from the character interactions instead of the camping itself.

Episode Context

Coming off Episode 4's exploration of what solo camping actually means to different people, Episode 5 narrows that question to Gen specifically, making his internal conflict the emotional centerpiece. It bridges the philosophical groundwork of the early episodes with the more practical, skill-sharing dynamic that emerges in Episode 6, 'Master Mode,' where Gen steps into a mentor role for Shizuku. At roughly the one-fifth mark of a 24-episode season, this is the show deliberately deepening its character foundations before the relationship evolves further.
