Snowball Earth Episode 1: The Savior Who Could Not Bring Salvation

The year 2025 begins with a stark warning: 'A.D. 2025.' Then, without prelude, a slug-like kaiju plummets from the sky, its roar the first sound in a global symphony of destruction. Tanks fire, cities crumble, and multiple kaiju rampage across iconic landmarks, pushing humanity to the brink. In response, the elite task force ELDE forms, a desperate measure to combat the overwhelming alien threat.

Amidst the wreckage and ongoing battles, a shadowy silhouette of a small boy appears, standing against a glowing background. The narrator promises a savior, 'until one unpretentious savior appears.' The subsequent visual opening pairs this boy with a massive, white robot, sometimes in battle, sometimes in a bleak, frozen landscape. This visual pairing foreshadows the deep connection and eventual world state.

We meet young Tetsuo, a small boy engrossed in a 'friend-making tips' book, while his friends play a boisterous game of kaiju and ELDE. He avoids their playful chaos, seeking solitude even when they try to include him. After they leave, Tetsuo is left alone in the classroom, watching the setting sun, then walks home, still a solitary figure. His friends’ distant shouts about 'self-destructing' hint at an ironic future.

The experimental robot, Snowman, stands before a building, comically protesting its function with a sign that reads, 'NO Self-Destruct, Robots live too.' Its creator, Yabusame, a boastful and eccentric scientist, explains that Snowman is an 'autonomous mobile bomb,' designed to lure kaiju and then self-destruct. Snowman’s digitized voice desperately declares, 'I don't want to die.'

A sudden kaiju attack interrupts Snowman’s protest, throwing the facility into urgency. As scientists rush about, young Tetsuo is seen climbing into Snowman’s cockpit, unbeknownst to anyone. The cockpit door seals shut behind him, leaving him inside. From the cockpit, Tetsuo promises Snowman, 'I will make sure you don't have to die.'

Yabusame, oblivious to Tetsuo's presence, dismisses his colleagues' concerns, confidently stating that piloting the robot is 'incredibly difficult' and only a genius could manage it. His arrogance is immediately shattered. Tetsuo presses a button; Snowman’s thrusters ignite, and the robot soars into the sky. Yabusame watches, mouth agape, his only word a stunned, 'Genius!'

A female reporter exalts Tetsuo's heroic feat, noting his young age and the public’s adoration. Yabusame readily steps in, claiming credit for Snowman’s success, eagerly accepting the public praise for 'defeating a kaiju.' Tetsuo, now in a pilot suit, continues to fight kaiju, but his face in the cockpit, strained and anxious, shows the toll of unwanted celebrity. The reporter hails him as 'our savior' as he slices through another kaiju.

A title card appears: '10 Years Later.' The camera reveals Earth, now a 'Snowball Earth,' entirely frozen and covered in ice. Aboard the ELDE Go battleship in space, an older Tetsuo reads intently from his 'Friend-Making Tips' book. He's preparing for the final battle, still clinging to the hope of connection, even after a decade of forced heroism.

The ELDE crew hails Tetsuo as he boards the upgraded Snowman, ready for the final confrontation. Yet, in the cockpit, surrounded by the ominous swarm of kaiju reflected in Snowman’s visor, Tetsuo appears downcast. He mutters, 'I want to become a valuable person,' a quiet wish contrasting with his public image as humanity's savior. Snowman's monitor shows a sad face.

Mist, the captain, commands the operation to begin. Snowman displays incredible power, its detached arms forming laser drones that precisely obliterate kaiju, followed by Snowman’s core firing a devastating beam. The ELDE Go then unleashes its 'Infinity Laser,' clearing vast swathes of the kaiju swarm. Just as the crew celebrates their decisive victory, a massive kaiju breaches the ship's bridge, ending the triumph abruptly.

In a desperate moment, Tetsuo cries out a name, 'Yukio!' He activates Snowman’s self-destruct sequence, sacrificing both himself and the robot to destroy the remaining kaiju. Debris from Snowman floats silently in space, a stark testament to the tragic end. Tetsuo’s lifeless, bloodied body then drifts into the void. An eyecatch simply states: 'Article 1: The Savior Who Couldn't Save,' echoing the bitter reality of the now frozen 'Snowball Earth.'
