Scum of the Brave
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Tokyo in the 2050s is a filthy neon sprawl where crime bosses called Demon Lords have superpowers from ether enhancement surgery, and the government's answer is to legalize bounty hunters called Heroes who juice themselves on a drug called E3 to keep up. It's less "save the world" and more "get paid, don't die." Yashiro, a.k.a. the Reaper, is a veteran Hero who'd rather eat pizza, drink beer, and play cards than deal with anyone else's problems. That changes when Aki Jogamine, a high school kid with more guts than sense, forces her way into his life demanding to be his apprentice. Yashiro reluctantly agrees—for a hefty fee—and takes on Aki and two other recruits, dragging himself back into the messy power struggles between Heroes, Demon Lords, and Tokyo's sprawling criminal organizations. The 24-episode TV series from OLM has this grimy near-future setting where morality is basically a suggestion, and the power system built around ether enhancement and E3 dependency gives the fights real stakes beyond just who hits harder. Yashiro's the kind of mentor who clearly cares but would never admit it, and watching him navigate that while training kids in a profession built on killing is where the tension lives. If you liked the dystopian cynicism of Psycho-Pass, the criminal underworld energy of Black Lagoon, or the morally gray superpowered loners of Darker than Black, this one's in that lane.
