When Rei slapped Usagi, I was genuinely shocked, but then I realized Mamoru was just taken and they really didn't have time for Usagi to just fall apart. It felt so harsh to see, but I totally think Rei did it because she cares about Usagi and just wanted to snap her into action, and honestly, Usagi desperately needed that kick in the pants.
