QUICK TAKES

More unanswered questions, what a sweet treat. The return of Astronomy-related puzzles makes it interactive for viewers who want to solve alongside Subaru. The scale of the tower is surprisingly nostalgic, with the sense of awe and overwhelming feeling bouncing back-and-forth.
Storytelling and world building was ok but it is getting a bit weird that Subaru knows so much about stars and constellations, and in such depths. Main character energy I guess.

This episode was basically Re:Zero looking directly at the audience and saying:
"Hey, remember all those theories you've had for years?"
"Good. Here's some fuel."
After several episodes focused on survival, mysteries, and Subaru's mental state, Episode 4 shifts heavily into lore territory. And honestly? It's some of the most exciting lore the series has dropped in a long time.
The biggest reveal is obviously Shula.
For years, the legendary Great Sage has been built up as one of the most important figures in the history of this world. Naturally, everyone arrives at the tower expecting to meet the Great Sage himself.
Instead, they find his apprentice.
And suddenly everything gets weird.
The moment Shula mistakes Subaru for Flugel is one of those scenes that immediately sends every Re:Zero fan into conspiracy mode. At first it seems like a misunderstanding, but the longer the episode goes on, the harder it becomes to dismiss.
The way she reacts to Subaru doesn't feel random.
It feels familiar.
And that's what makes it so unsettling.
What's especially interesting is that Shula doesn't seem confused by Subaru's personality at all. If anything, the two bounce off each other surprisingly naturally. Their sense of humor, reactions, and overall energy feel oddly compatible.
Which raises a very uncomfortable question:
What if Subaru and Flugel are connected in a way that's much deeper than anyone expected?
Of course, Re:Zero being Re:Zero, answering one question immediately creates ten more.
The tower itself is another huge piece of the puzzle. The constellation challenge feels almost absurdly specific. It isn't just designed for someone intelligent.
It's designed for someone from Earth.
And more specifically, someone like Subaru.
At this point the series is dropping so many hints that it's becoming difficult to believe they're all coincidences.
Whether Subaru is Flugel, becomes Flugel, or is somehow connected to him through Return by Death, the show clearly wants us asking those questions.
And honestly?
I'm asking them.
Repeatedly.
Loudly.
The best part is that Re:Zero never stops moving the immediate story forward while doing all of this. The episode isn't just a collection of lore reveals. It still feels like a step forward in the current journey, while simultaneously making the entire history of the world feel much bigger than before.
That's something Re:Zero has always done exceptionally well.
A single conversation can completely change how you view events from multiple seasons ago.
Final Verdict: Episode 4 feels like the moment Season 4 truly opens the floodgates on Re:Zero's larger mysteries.
Shula's appearance is great.
The Flugel questions are fascinating.
And somehow the possibility that Subaru's story might be far more complicated than we ever imagined feels more believable than ever.
At this point, I have more questions than answers.
Which means Re:Zero is doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

good

Shaula making her big entrance in the latest episode completely stole the show. Watching her interact with Subaru is just hilarious because her chaotic energy brings such a fun dynamic to the watchtower. White Fox absolutely nailed the pacing and the animation looks so crisp.

She’s definitely an "interesting" character, but I’m not sure whether I should trust her yet.

EPISODE CONTEXT
Building directly off 'The Keeper of the Watchtower,' this episode moves deeper into the Pleiades Watchtower arc rather than lingering at the threshold. At episode four of nineteen, the season is still establishing the rules and threats of this new environment, making this a foundational installment. The mysteries seeded here — particularly around Shaula — are positioned to pay off across the season's second and third acts.
