Episode Context

After episodes 1-3 established Ranma's curse, the Tendo household dynamics, and the romantic tensions with Kuno, episode 4 shifts gears to introduce Ryoga Hibiki, a rival whose ongoing feud with Ranma becomes one of the series' most enduring storylines across all 161 episodes. This early introduction signals the show's pattern of steadily expanding its ensemble cast, with each new character adding fresh comedic and competitive layers to Ranma's already complicated life.
