Synopsis

When a restless young prince from 1,000 years ago steals a demon king's magic scepter, he accidentally time-travels to modern Japan. That's the setup for Ojarumaru, a long-running kids TV series from Studio Gallop that's been quietly charming audiences since 1998. Ojarumaru Sakanoue is a Heian-era prince who's fed up with courtly life, and when he stumbles upon Great King Enma's powerful scepter, he ends up falling through a portal into present-day suburbia. There, he's taken in by a boy named Kazuma Tamura and his grandfather Tommy, and starts figuring out how the modern world works — with all the culture shock you'd expect from someone who's used to silk robes and court poetry. Hot on his trail are the Oni Child Trio (Aobee, Kisuke, and Akane), three bumbling demons tasked with getting the scepter back, though their attempts lean more slapstick than threatening. The show has this really pleasant vibe — episodic, low-stakes, and genuinely funny, with episodes that parody fairy tales, fables, and pop culture in ways that keep things fresh. The contrast between Heian-era mannerisms and modern life carries a lot of the humor. If you enjoyed the cozy magical charm of Jewelpet or the gentle weirdness of Magimoji Rurumo, this hits a similar sweet spot. It's the kind of show you throw on when you want something lighthearted without it being mindless.
