Pretty x Cation The Animation Specials

After his parents relocate for work, a guy moves to Tokyo alone, ends up renting a room from his well-meaning aunt, and gets gently nudged into actually doing something about his nonexistent love life. Spring has arrived, he's surrounded by interesting people, and his aunt is basically his hype woman whether he wants one or not. From there, the show follows him navigating the awkward, uncertain territory of early relationships — with Nozomi, his sharp and kind classmate who secretly has a deep otaku side she keeps hidden, her younger sister Sakura who's bubbly and fashion-obsessed, and Sapsan, a Russian exchange student with a surprisingly specific passion for Japanese history. These two DVD specials from T-Rex lean into that warm, slightly flustered energy that comes with meeting someone new and not quite knowing what to do with it. The animation handles character expressions well, which matters when so much of what's happening is communicated through a glance or a hesitant moment rather than dialogue.
