episode 3 shifts focus slightly onto Rei Tsukumo and the episode is better for it. Rei is a fascinating character because his chunibyo isn't the loud theatrical kind — it's the quiet calculated kind where he genuinely believes he is a genius mastermind manipulating everyone around him from the shadows. which makes it even funnier when his schemes fall apart in the most mundane ways possible.the Hero Club becoming convinced that Tsukumo is a spy from some mysterious Agency and dedicating themselves to uncovering his true allegiance is exactly the kind of paranoid conspiracy comedy this show does well. every piece of "evidence" they collect is completely mundane but interpreted through their chunibyo lens it becomes devastating proof of shadowy intentions. Mizuki watching all of this unfold while knowing full well there is no conspiracy is peak secondhand embarrassment comedy.what the episode also does quietly is give you a little more of Tsukumo's actual personality underneath the mastermind persona. there are small moments where you catch a glimpse of someone who is maybe a little lonely and finds belonging in the absurdity of the Hero Club even while pretending to be above it all. it doesn't push it too hard — this is still primarily a comedy episode — but those glimpses make him more interesting than a one note character.the pacing in this episode is slightly more uneven than the first two. there are a couple of gags that go on just a beat too long and one or two scenes where Mizuki doesn't get enough reaction time to balance out the boys' energy. still funny, still enjoyable, just not quite as tight as episode 2.
