Oruchuban Ebichu
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Running your entire apartment — cooking, cleaning, shopping — is a tiny, relentlessly cheerful hamster with absolutely no filter. That's Ebichu, the tiny, relentlessly cheerful housekeeper who lives only to serve her owner, a 25-year-old office worker struggling through a mediocre job and a worse boyfriend. The problem is that Ebichu talks, notices everything, and has zero concept of what information should stay private. Her innocent attempts to help tend to blow up spectacularly, usually at her owner's expense, and the punishment she gets for it is... not hamster-appropriate. Don't let the cute fuzzy protagonist fool you — this is an adult comedy from Gainax with genuine edge to it. The humor comes from the gap between how earnest Ebichu is and how chaotic real adult life actually gets, particularly around her owner's relationship with a guy Ebichu has basically diagnosed as a lost cause. It's absurdist and a little mean and genuinely funny in a way that feels closer to Golden Boy or Crayon Shin-chan than anything you'd expect from a show about a hamster. If you liked the way Crayon Shin-chan uses a clueless kid to expose adult dysfunction, Ebichu does the same thing but smaller, fluffier, and somehow more chaotic. At 24 short episodes adapted from the manga, it's a quick watch that commits fully to its weird premise without ever apologizing for it.
