This is the lightest episode so far. No blood, no battles, no rape threats. Just Heizo being clever, Kumehachi being conflicted, and an old man getting humiliated in the most gentlemanly way possible. The animation is great the fireworks scene is breathtaking, and the use of morning glories to show time passing is a lovely touch.

Nice to see a different side of Heizō here, and I liked that it spent more time on him as a person. This episode was slower and didn’t have much action, but I liked it more for the characters and their relationships. Had a few nice moments that made Heizō feel more likable. Worth watching if you enjoy slower episodes that spend more time on the characters.

Un episodio que destaca por su calidad visual y por la animación, siendo la mejor hasta ahora. Además de mostrarnos una química interesante entre el protagonista y un anciano que recién conoce en el episodio.

Episode Context

Onihei downshifts from its usual procedural tension into something quieter and more reflective at the season's midpoint. This episode centers on Heizo Hasegawa's encounter with Tomogoro, a former thief now living as a boatman, and uses their dynamic to explore themes of personal loss, honor, and whether redemption is truly possible for those who've walked the wrong path. The pacing is deliberately contemplative, don't come in expecting sword fights or chase sequences. Instead, the strength here lies in the nuanced push and pull between two men defined by opposite sides of the law, punctuated by moments of unexpected levity. It's a character study wrapped in Edo-period atmosphere, examining the moral gray zones that make Heizo such a compelling protagonist. A slower burn, but richly layered.
