While I was watching the first few minutes, I was thinking to myself, "This is getting more visually calm. It's not as intense as before. I like this." And suddenly: "Ah yes... the toothbrush episode."

I had no idea what to expect. I never spoiled myself about this episode, so I had no idea what it was about, and for the first time, I think I have no words.

In previous episodes, I mentioned some deep ideas. I was able to understand the philosophical, psychological, and even therapeutic insights...

And now, I have to deal with the moral conflict of this twisted relationship.

This is going to be classified, for me, as one of the worst and best episodes of anime I've ever seen.

Karen and Koyomi's challenge completely stole the spotlight, while Tsukihi's sudden interruption made everything even more chaotic. The direction, expressions, and timing turned a simple scene into unforgettable comedy.

No anime episode is talked more than this one in the series itself and it should. It starts off silly and comical until it takes a step further in its verbal and visual storytelling. We can't just brush it off and ignore the finer details because it plays on your senses.

EPISODE CONTEXT

Episode 8 marks the official start of the Tsukihi Phoenix arc after the Karen Bee storyline wrapped in the previous episode, making it a deliberate transition point in the back third of Nisemonogatari's 11-episode run. While the spotlight lingers on Koyomi and Karen's relationship, the episode is quietly laying groundwork for the supernatural revelations surrounding Tsukihi that will drive the season's final stretch. With only three episodes remaining, this slower setup signals that the conclusion will need to escalate quickly.
