this one is mostly setup and political stuff after the pain arc wraps up, danzo stepping up as hokage is interesting but the episode itself is kind of just moving pieces around, watchable but feels like a breath before the next storm

It is interesting how this focuses on detective work instead of just throwing kunai around and the threat of the blueprints being gone feels like a real problem for the village

It felt so typical of Naruto to defend that old man even after the blueprints went missing and his loyalty to anyone he shares a meal with is pretty deep

I think this is one of the better filler episodes because the mystery actually feels like it has stakes. Seeing the ANBU surround Naruto at the end was a massive shock, since he was just trying to be a good friend. It is cool that the show is letting the genin handle a serious investigation while the village is being rebuilt.

That green fog swirling through the village at night gave me such a creepy feeling, like a bad omen hanging in the air. I just had this gut instinct that something awful was about to happen, and then that explosion in the forest totally confirmed my worst suspicions.

I am so shocked that old man Gennou just blew himself up like that and he seemed like such a nice guy at the ramen shop but then those explosive tags came out of nowhere

You rarely see the whole group getting together for a mission like this and it is cool seeing Shikamaru give orders while everyone else actually listens for once

Naruto sharing ramen with Gennou was so sweet and seeing that old guy blow himself up in the forest later really hurt

You can tell Shikamaru is stressed about the mission but watching him assign the different teams based on their skills such as using the Byakugan for searching was smart and made the episode feel organized

Tsunade calling for an S-rank emergency over a carpenter shows how much of a threat the blueprints are and the tension in the village feels real even if this is just a side story

It is always fun when the show brings the whole group together for a mission, especially since seeing Ino complain about the morgue while Sakura stays calm shows how much they have changed

I think the way Naruto stands up for Gennou even after the guy blew himself up shows how much he values anyone who treats him like a person and it makes the ending where the ANBU corner him feel much heavier than your usual filler episode because he is just a kid who wanted a friend and now he is a suspect

The way that green fog rolled into the village was actually pretty creepy and it set a good mood before everything went south with the explosion in the forest and the stolen blueprints

You have to feel bad for Naruto when he defends the carpenter because he really thought he found a new friend at the ramen shop and then the guy revealed he wanted to destroy Konoha

The training ground gathering made me happy even for a filler episode because the whole squad had to actually use their heads and work as a team

You really see the Worf Effect in action when the elite ANBU get played by a single old man with some paper bombs because it makes the top ninja look completely useless in this story

Shikamaru taking charge of the search for the blueprints shows why he is the only one who got promoted to chunin, but seeing Naruto get surrounded by the ANBU at the end was a harsh twist

I am actually so sad that the old man Gennou turned out to be a villain because him sharing his ramen with Naruto was actually really sweet and now Naruto looks like a suspect and it is awful

That cliffhanger with the ANBU surrounding Naruto was intense and it sucks seeing everyone look at him with suspicion again just because he was friendly to a lonely old man

Shikamaru leading the group and immediately breaking them into tactical units shows why he is the leader and he handles the pressure of the stolen plans well

EPISODE CONTEXT

Sitting at episode 197, this falls squarely in the lengthy filler block that dominates the final stretch of Naruto before Shippuden, well past the last canon arc. It follows the standalone 'Hot-Blooded Confrontation: Student vs. Sensei' episode and feeds directly into episode 198, 'The ANBU Gives Up? Naruto's Recollection,' which continues the mystery thread introduced here. For viewers pushing through to Shippuden, this is skippable canon-wise but offers a rare full-ensemble filler scenario.
