classic filler bait where you sit through a treasure hunt only for the payoff to be a corny life lesson scroll, feels like the show is stalling and everyone knows it, the ame-nin fight is barely a consolation prize

Those flashbacks of a younger Anko with Orochimaru add a lot of weight to why she acts the way she does now and the atmosphere in that lab was creepy

I know most people say to skip all the fillers after the Sasuke retrieval mission, but this arc actually feels important because of Anko, and learning about her time with Orochimaru in the Land of the Sea and how she got her curse mark is such a cool bit of backstory that I never expected from a filler episode like this one

Anko deserves way more attention so seeing her take center stage while she remembers what Orochimaru did to her in that lab was a pleasant surprise for a filler

I think the history between Anko and Orochimaru is so tragic and seeing those flashes of her past in the Land of the Sea made me feel for her

sado_chadian_492
Watching Anko deal with her past in the Land of the Sea makes this specific filler arc worth the watch even if you usually skip the non-canon episodes

I liked seeing Anko actually get some screen time and her history with Orochimaru in the Land of the Sea makes her way more interesting than before

The way the show explores Anko and her curse mark reveals so much about what she went through, especially with that flashback to her time with Orochimaru at the laboratory

Seeing Yoroi and Misumi show up again after the Chunin Exams was such a random blast from the past and it made the filler feel more connected to the rest of the show

The animation for the ocean and the underwater base looked really rough and it is hard to stay invested when the art quality drops this much during a side arc

Yoroi using that chakra draining move again brought back memories of the preliminaries and it was cool to see how Naruto handles it now that he is stronger
zumi_zephyr_498's avatar
zumi_zephyr_498
It is weird how Naruto can just spam shadow clones to solve every single problem on this boat and the stakes feel nonexistent when he is this overpowered compared to the villains

Why are we still fighting Orochimaru subordinates that look like budget versions of the Sound Four and this Amachi guy is not intimidating at all

Seeing Anko struggle with those flashes of her past at the Forbidden Island actually made me feel bad for her and the way she still hates Orochimaru is so clear

The plot with Amachi and the sea monster feels like a massive distraction from the actual plot and the pacing is dragging way too much for a filler story

Watching Ino and Shino try to work together on this boat mission is funny and their dynamic is way better than I expected for a random team up

I know most people skip these filler arcs, but seeing Anko deal with her old memories from the time she spent with Orochimaru actually felt somewhat important to her character and it was pretty surprising to see Yoroi and Misumi pop up again after all this time, since they were just minor villains from the forest of death back in the day

Anko deserves so much more screen time than she gets in the main story, and it is nice to see her past with Orochimaru get explored a little bit even in these side episodes

I forgot Yoroi and Misumi even existed until they showed up today and seeing those old Chunin Exam guys again was actually kind of cool even if this is just filler

its kind of annoying that this isnt in the manga but seeing more of the land of the sea and how it ties into orochimaru and his experiments is still worth watching

EPISODE CONTEXT

Sitting at episode 171 of 220, this is firmly in Naruto's extended filler stretch and falls within the Kaima Capture Mission arc. It follows 'The Closed Door,' where the team encountered Isaribi and the aftermath of Orochimaru's experiments, and directly sets the stage for 'Despair: A Fractured Heart' by deepening Anko's backstory and escalating the stakes before the arc's central confrontation.
